I'd tend to remove the unfortunately-placed price sticker before giving it to your mother, Sunlight! Very Happy

You think she would notice? They both look very proud of their achievement.

Tinned Toms - You know it makes sense!

So my 14 year old son has just asked me to buy him a book called Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. Just wondering if anyone has read it and how suitable that'd be and if it's any good? This is the first time he's took an interest in books so I'm hoping it's not inappropriate.

Never heard of it but just googled it and it sounds like a hard read!

Yeah I know! My lad clearly has more patience and intellect than I.

Give it a quick Google 58. I think it may have some controversial content for a 14 year old so it’s your call I suppose. I haven’t read it but I once read a magazine article on the author and the book.
I’d let him read it - good on him if he’s reading to this level at his age.

I’m reading Bob Mortimer’s autobiography Very Happy

I've looked into it a little and it seems very complex and esoteric. I'll let have a go at it and see how he gets on. It would be a shame to restrict him from reading to this level if he's mature enough to not only read it but understand it in some way. From what I can gather, you could need to read it three or four times to fully grasp it. Time will tell.

It makes a change at that age from them perusing the Mayfair and escort magazines whilst having a fag behind the bike sheds.

Your kid will go far! Very Happy

And away! I love Bob Mortimer, a naturally funny man. I don't even like fishing but love him and Paul Whitehouse on BBC2.

Hilarious and loveable at the same time. I’m hard pressed to think of anyone who has made me laugh more. He couldn’t have done it without Vic Reeves of course but Paul Whitehouse, Charlie Higson, Rick Mayall and Bob have given me the biggest laughs over the years.

I first came across Vic, Bob and the fat one on the drums (his name has slipped my mind!) on shooting stars. That must have been mid 90’s?

I think Vic and Bob did something else on After Dark on Gold but couldn’t really get in to it.

After some of the names that have gone around, I’m going to have to go and watch some Young Ones, Bottom and Shooting Stars I haven’t watched in yonks.

Whilst I’m on holiday I’ve been reading “Putin’s People - how the KGB won back Russia and took on the West”

Absolutely gobsmacking account of how Putin’s old KGB and mafia buddies took state control of everything from resources to media to the legal system back from the oligarchs Yeltsin created and duped an unsuspecting West - and the Russian people - into supporting a return to totalitarian empire building Russia.

It’s a hard read but we’ll worth it.

Sounds interesting but bloody hard work Lusty. I’m attempting to get through Cormac McCarthy’s Outer Dark. Third time lucky!
