Dorian Dervite admits Wanderers let down the fans that had rallied around them for the Cardiff City game.

A first goal in Bolton colours did little to brighten the mood of the Frenchman, who urged supporters to stick with their team despite another dismal defeat that left them adrift at the foot of the Championship.

“We have to keep believing and fighting,” he told The Bolton News. “We feel bad for the fans who have been very good regarding our situation. We are sorry we did not get a result.

“I would rather not have scored at all and got three points because we need a lift.

“We have to work harder and do better. It is frustrating because I don’t think Cardiff were better than us but we say the same every week – it is so annoying.

“We have to stick together, there is no other way.”

The #fillthemacron campaign swirled round social media in the build-up to Saturday’s game and while the crowd of just over 13,000 was still below the season’s average so far, the atmosphere was noticeably better.

Buoyed by the terrace reaction to twice going a goal behind, Wanderers fought their way back into the contest and had good chances to go ahead before former Atherton Colls winger Anthony Pilkington continued his excellent scoring record against Bolton with his third goal in consecutive starts for Cardiff and Norwich City.

It was too much to ask to come back for a third time and Dervite was left to ponder another sad note in a week where so much has gone wrong off the field for the club.

“We have tried to stay focused on the football,” said the defender, of headlines regarding possible administration and financial meltdown at the Macron. “We heard the rumours about the owner’s problems.

“But we should not use that as an excuse. We need to keep playing because they (the club) give us everything that is needed.

“I don’t use it as an excuse for this result.”

Dervite also refused to use the fact players were not paid last month as an excuse for the defeat – Wanderers’ ninth of the campaign.

It emerged a week ago that the senior squad was not paid its November wages because of what the board’s financial advisor Trevor Birch termed a “short term funding issue” but the defender maintains the financial situation at the club is not affecting form.

“It is not normal but in other leagues – I have played in Spain and France – it happens a lot too,” he said.

“They have told us that we are going to get paid so we have to believe them and try to focus on trying to keep the club in this league.

Watched by Dean Holdsworth and members of the Sports Shield Consortium, who are frontrunners in the race to buy the club, Dervite accepts that time could be running out for some at the Macron.

Although manager Neil Lennon’s job currently looks secure, the investment likely to come with a takeover could mean a few players are displaced.

“Something will change,” Dervite noted. “We have to wait and see when they are coming, we are not 100 per cent sure.

“When that happens we will see what they want to do. They are in charge after that, so we can only wait and see.”
