I'm pretty sure that went up BBurn road to either Astley B or up Belmont road to Oldhams Estate?

I'm not Amos but the Number 1 (as it used to be before it turned in to the 501) used to go from town (originally the Town Hall steps) along Deansgate and turning right at the Fire Station, over the bridge passed the blind school, turning into Vernon Street, passed the Guide Dogs home, turning left on to Merehall Street and on through to Tennyson Street passed the Sorting Office and on to Esrick Street, then Elgin Street which turns into Church Road and heading off in the direction of Moss Bank Park.

When Brownlow Way was built it travelled up that side of the park rather than the other as it used to do when I lived around that area.

A number of years since I was on a bus in Bolton but I would think the 501 route probably hasn't changed that drastically since my time has it?

Happy days.
You are probably right Sluffy. It just seems that the 501 is more of a familiar number with me than the 528 which I don't remember at all.

I have never lived in Halliwell and also never knocked around in that area when I was a kid.

Perhaps I am familiar with the number from seeing it on a regular basis when waiting for the bus outside Woolworths on Bridge street.

I do remember the B10 that went to Astley Bridge though.

It's terminus used to be outside Townley's iirc.

It used be a 'through' bus from the Doffcocker area passing through Halliwell and the town and heading up to the hospital and back.

I guess with Townley's being the main maternity facility for Bolton for donkeys years and people back then not having cars, that most Bolton folk of a certain age have at one time or another been on the number 1 bus.

As both a Townleys baby and being raised in Halliwell I know I had, plenty of times!

Firstbus 501 is Doffcocker to Farnworth and where I live, at top of street is Tennyson street which 501 uses and bottom of street is Halliwell Road which  and is served by Cumfybus/Arriva North West/Diamond North West 525/527 and 526 routes

Transdev Lancashire United 1 goes between Blackburn and Bolton  via Astley Bridge

UK Coachways 535 goes to Belmont via Astley Bridge

Arriva North West 534 goes to Oldhams Estate  via  Astley Bridge

In 1988 there were 99 bus routes covering the whole of Bolton
In 2016 there are 53 bus routes and not all of Bolton has a bus route any more>

A reduction of almost 50%

Could you imagine that happening in London?

Of course not!!!!  But this i what happens when the Governmenet cuts subsidies to local transport authorities but keep on ploughing money in to TfL!!

It is like the railways were per head London/South East get almost £2800 whilst in North West, per head, it is only £11.50

Yeah, fair enough.

I will happily concede that standing in a rainy bus stop in Daub Hill waiting for the 593 (or whichever bus services that route - no need for clarification, ta) to trundle past so you can tick it off your list as "spotted" is just as much fun as fishing for Grouper off the back of a boat in the Caribbean.

You've got me there.

Just look at the style and colours of the train, just fantastic.

I had the fantastic opportunity last year to visit the train museum in York last year where they had one of these.

Was an absolute dream come true although it wasn't in my favourite colours!

I've bitten my tongue all week since this thread was created but I've had a drink now so it's coming out.

A thread about which bus you used to catch?

Seriously....?

Is this where we are now?

It makes the Walking Dead thread on "that other site" seem like compelling reading by comparison.

Mike Smith's laughing at us.

Tbh I've been thinking the same. I didn't have the heart to say it seeing as so many people are clearly enjoying the bus chatter. Each to their own I suppose.
