A late Cheltenham penalty ensured that Wanderers bowed out of the Checkatrade Trophy at a sodden Whaddon Road on Tuesday evening.
Amari Morgan-Smith’s spot-kick on the stroke of the 90 was ultimately the decider in a tightly contested affair, one which had seen chances at a premium for both sides.
And following the final whistle in the clash, manager Phil Parkinson covered the following points…
On the game as a whole…
I thought the attitude of the lads was excellent. We made a lot of changes and the players who came in worked really hard.
It’s a game we dominated really and we’ve just been undone inside the last few minutes with their penalty.
We may have been beaten, but I thought the attitude was good and that was important for us alongside getting some players minutes under their belts which have been needed.
We go into the weekend now though with a lot of players coming back into the fray and it’s about picking the right team for Sunday.
On players picking up game time after spells on the sidelines…
It was massively important for lads such as Dean Moxey and Lewis Buxton, who have been injured for a while, to play tonight alongside the likes of Keshi Anderson, James Henry and a number of others.
I think that we got the work and the effort that we needed in terms of getting those players ready for action as we come in towards a tricky run of games for us.
On the return to action of Max Clayton…
I’m really pleased for Max to get that 15 minutes under his belt and his season starts tonight really.
He’s worked really hard to get to this stage and I’m just pleased that we were able to get him on, albeit not in front of the biggest crowd, at the best stadium or in the biggest competition.
Equally though, when you’ve been out for a long time like Max it’s just important to get back out there onto the pitch and we know he’s got quality.
Onthe status of the injured players in the team…
Tom Thorpe is back in training, while Gary Madine is back in the mix now. We’ve got other players ready to come back into the fray too which is good because we need everybody as we come into this run of games that we’ve got coming up.
The games come thick and fast now and alongside that, we’ve got an exciting FA Cup draw – perhaps the most exciting one we could have had in round two.
Both ourselves and Sheffield United are two teams with a great history in the FA Cup and we look forward to that game. Hopefully it will be one that we’ll go into still in a strong league position.
And finally, on unfortunately losing the overall unbeaten run but still maintaining the run in league fixtures…
There’s a way to lose and I can’t really fault any of the lads tonight – everybody played with a purpose but it just wasn’t to be on the night.
We’ll go to Peterborough at the weekend though looking to carry on our form in the league.
