Wanderers face a major defensive headache after Lawrie Wilson limped out of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at MK Dons.

Phil Parkinson fears his only specialist right-back could be missing for a number of weeks with a hamstring injury.

Scans early this week will determine the exact length of his lay-off but with Lewis Buxton also struggling for fitness, the Whites boss may have to make-do for this weekend’s visit of Walsall.

“It doesn’t look good for Lawrie, he’s done his hamstring and that’s a real blow for us,” Parkinson said.

“It’s the one position we couldn’t afford an injury. We’ll have a think about things this week and see what we have got from within the squad.”

Parkinson could potentially sign a free agent, as there is one remaining spot in the squad quota as laid down by the Football League.

He revealed he would be inviting a trialist in to Lostock this week but admits the chances of finding a player ready to put straight into the side are slim.

“We have got a lad coming in on trial this week but it’s a long shot in itself,” he told The Bolton News. “Anyone coming in who hasn’t played for a long time is going to take a while to get up to speed. We are going to look at a couple of players but other than that, we can go what we’ve got.”

Wanderers also lost left-back Andy Taylor before kick-off at Stadium:mk to a groin injury.

The club has not yet ruled out his chances of playing next weekend but Parkinson has at least got cover in the position.

“Andy had a slight problem with his groin earlier in the week but trained Friday and was desperate to play,” the manager explained.

“When he came in from the warm-up he said he was feeling it – and there was no need to take a risk because Deano (Moxey) was there.”

Parkinson was also critical of referee David Coote’s decision making on Saturday.

“There was a big crowd and I think the referee was joining in with the party atmosphere for the first 20 minutes,” he said. “I was going mad on the touchline.

“He was booking Lawrie and Beevs for innocuous incidents and letting their players get away with murder. It only evened out at the end.”

Perhaps he has forgot about Buxton, thought he was a specialist RB?

I would like to see us switch to 3 at the back derik, wheater and beevers.  Taylor and Long could play as wing backs and get Vela and Spearing further up the pitch in support of Clayton, Le Fondre and Madine as a target man.

If we have to change shape due to injuries with the fullbacks it could be a blessing in disguise.

I understand that Wanderers are seeking permission for Lewis Buxton not to count against the quota because of persistent injury problems.

...so I guess he's more or less out for the rest of the season?

Vela played full back for a while but I doubt he would be played there again now.

Buxton is injured still so we have no cover. I suspect Derik will play there on Saturday. There is no way Parky will go to a back three, he will stick with the same formation come what may

Vela would be wasted playing full back.

I don't rate Buxton at all. He runs like a Dad in the schools sports day egg and spoon race.

But I agree Vela would be wasted at full back.

The Buxton injury sounds a bit odd to me, think I read somewhere it was a persistent back problem?

wonder if he saw the fella who played in the Superbowl with a fractured fibia.

TBF I don't rate him either, earlier in the season when he played he always came out chewing an energy bar at the start of the second half and whizzed it on the side of the pitch, then would return to it after about 10 mins of play.

light weight ponce, some might say.

It is a blow Boggers, he has been excellent this season and we have no back up

Agree Wilson has done well this season, moving Vela will is the only realistic option for me, Derik does not have the energy to play as a FB.

Parky has options but is unlikely to take them. He could bring in Dervite and go with a back 3. He could use one of the wingers as a RB. He could promote Nicky Spooner's lad Callum from the U21s (no experience at this level but very athletic) He could abuse Derik or Vela again by playing them out of position.
But I think Parky will use the opportunity to bring someone in, probably this guy on trial. Anything rather than change his beloved system?

Bolton Wanderers searching for right-back answers after losing Lawrie Wilson for minimum 10 weeks

WANDERERS have been hit by the news Lawrie Wilson will be out for a minimum 10-week spell, leaving the club without a recognised senior right-back.

The Whites confirmed Wilson will see a specialist tomorrow to see whether surgical intervention is needed on a torn hamstring tendon, damaged in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at MK Dons.

If he requires an operation it is likely the 29-year-old, who missed just one game in league and cup competition since October 4, will be unavailable for the rest of the season.

Phil Parkinson had already been looking for cover, inviting Bulgaria international Ivan Bandalovski in for a trial which started on Monday.

It is understood the club passed on Paul Caddis – who has linked-up with Blackburn Rovers – but could try and tempt former utility man Joey O’Brien into a trial if the Irishman recovers quickly from a calf injury.

O’Brien, who made 70 appearances in seven seasons with the Whites during the Premier League era, has been without a club since his release at West Ham last summer. The Dubliner spent five years at Upton Park and helped the Hammers back into the Premier League via the play-offs under Sam Allardyce in 2012.

The lack of an immediate replacement means Parkinson will have to make do and mend for this weekend’s visit of Walsall and the Valentine’s Day clash with Rochdale three days later.

The manager’s current options include drafting Derik Osede or Josh Vela in on the right side of defence, or changing his formation entirely.

But the Whites boss has got some better news on the opposite side of his back four, with Andy Taylor making good progress from the groin problem which forced him to pull out of the team at the last moment on Saturday.

Taylor missed his first league outing in 18 at Milton Keynes but fears that he too could be sidelined for an extended period have been eased.
