CYBER ATTACK NHS cyber attack plunges NHS into chaos as ‘ransomware’ brings down IT systems across the country forcing hospitals to warn patients not to come to A&E
Medics report messages flashing on their screens demanding cash to free encrypted files

A MASSIVE cyber attack has plunged the NHS into chaos as computers across the country shut down forcing patients to be turned away from A&E.

The large-scale attack has caused “significant problems” with IT systems and telephone networks, with 16 hospital trusts affected.

The “ransomware” computer attack is demanding $300 in electronic currency to free files from encryption.

There are reports that trusts and hospitals affected include North Cumbria, Morecambe Bay hospitals, Blackpool, Barts Health in London, Colchester, Greater Manchester and Derbyshire.

GPs are being forced to use pen and paper while they issue is being worked on, according to the Blackpool Gazette.

Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, which sees 4,000 patients a day across Derbyshire and parts of Leicestershire, said all of its IT systems had been “shut down”.

East and North Hertfordshire NHS also confirmed they experienced a “major IT problem, believed to be caused by a cyber attack”.

They added in a statement: “Immediately on discovery of the problem, the trust acted to protect its IT systems by shutting them down; it also meant that the trust’s telephone system is not able to accept incoming calls.

“The trust is postponing all non-urgent activity for today and is asking people not to come to A&E – please ring NHS111 for urgent medical advice or 999 if it is a life-threatening emergency.

“To ensure that all back-up processes and procedures were put in place quickly, the trust declared a major internal incident to make sure that patients already in the trust’s hospitals continued to receive the care they need.”

NHS England confirmed they were aware of the problem and would be releasing details soon.

NHS Digital said: “We’re aware that a number of trusts that have reported potential issues to the CareCERT team. We believe it to be ransomware.”

NHS computers are ancient. Some systems have only just upgraded to Windows 7.

The majority are still on XP.

My sister applied for funding for their practice to upgrade when Microsoft stopped supporting it 2 years ago and was told no.

So she's not altogether surprised by this.

The problem is that it's a bit more complex that.

Other software may not run on a newer operating system so that means even more spending upgrading additional software and some is bespoke then it will cost thousands.

I.T equipment needs upgrading to support it all because it's too outdated Plus staff to go on training courses etc.

The Tories had better get their hands in their pockets.

We all know that any computer /upgrade projects done for the government are steeply overcharged by the contractors, and the project itself isn't helped when the NHS planners constantly chop and change their requirements. When this has happened, its easier to keep the current processes, so leaving the service open to such attacks. These attacks have been coming for years, and the vast majority of public services have been hardened to them. However, with such a large and disparate service as the NHS, trying to get it all together is an almost impossible job, and we must be talking a few billion to get it right. Its an amount that nobody is willing to commit, especially in one go.

I think the Chinese are the worst offenders of cyber attacks on British industry and the country's infrastructure. Mind you, the Russians aren't far behind.

The worrying thing is that this wasn't even targeted at the NHS. It was just a random piece of ransomware that happened to hit part of the NHS as well as businesses. Shows how vulnerable we are nowadays with our over-dependence on technology.

Around 99 countries have been hit, including Russia and China.

I don't think it will be long before we start hearing  details about the hackers, especially when you consider all the big hitters will be directing their national cyber forensic teams at the problem.

I'd have thought they'd be dead already.

It only hit us in my Hospital at about 3.30pm as our internet, email and other services went down, didn't affect me too much as it was Friday and i was in weekend mode already  Very Happy.

I'm hoping it's all sorted for tomorrow as believe it or not i do have a lot on next week and without access to the internet i'm scuppered.

We did upgrade to windows 7 about 18 months ago from XP but we are miles behind in terms of IT.

This is why the NHS is on its knees.

Why does a bedpan washer need a PC?
