Newcastle United are preparing to send Adam Armstrong on loan for the first half of next season.

The England Under-20 international picked up a World Cup winners medal after starring in the tournament this month but the player’s representatives are understood to have been instructed to find Armstrong a suitable club in time for the start of the season.

The Geordie spent last season at Sky Bet Championship outfit Barnsley were he played 35 times and netted six goals.

Armstrong had previously scored 20 goals in 40 games for Coventry City in League One in the 2015/16 season.

Now, he is expected to be sent out to an EFL club and while some fans think Armstrong is worth another look at United, the Magpies are trying to slim down a 34 man squad in time for July 3.

Just like last summer, there are a number of clubs interested in taking Armstrong on loan.

Sources in the North-West say newly promoted Championship side Bolton Wanderers are keen to take Armstrong to the Macron Stadium while a clutch of League One clubs have also enquired.

Brentford also made checks on the 20-year-old from Chapel House earlier in the summer but no deal was struck.

Rafa Benitez held talks with Armstrong last summer with the Academy product indicating he’d be willing to stay and fight for his place.

But the decision was taken to send him on loan to the Tykes.

This summer that decision seems to have been made earlier as Newcastle prepare for their return to the Premier League.

Reflecting on his loan stint at Barnsley, Armstrong said earlier this summer: “There was a lot of expectation on me, with how well I did at Coventry, to try and do the exact same again in a different league, but football’s not like that.

“I still scored goals in the Championship and did well, I thought, so moving forward now onto next season I’ll see where that brings me.

“I’ll be back in pre-season with Newcastle and see how things go.”
