I despise the Daily Mail and its hypocritical and nasty views but is it a good idea to ban a newspaper, even one as offensive as the Mail?

I wouldn't call this a ban. They've simply reverted to Andrex.

Do people still buy newspapers on trains these days?

I guess they must but in my limited travel experiences these days - mainly around London and the underground - most people who actually look at a paper (the vast majority have their nose in their phone) simply look at the 'free' ones - Metro, Evening Standard.

Seems the decision was taken on economic grounds in which case it seems fair enough to me - and I guess most who really wanted to read the Mail could probably do so on-line.

Opposition to the free press and victimisation of specific newspapers started in Germany 1933. Thin end of the wedge.
This time it’s the left that are the initiating factor. Disgraceful.
Not a fan myself - we live in a democracy allegedly. Offensive to some - acceptable to others. Free press

The Mail are all for free speech, unless it's upholding UK law in a way that may obstruct Brexit in which case you're an enemy of the people.

Or speaking out against Brexit, that would be a saboteur that needs crushing.
