A goal in each half for hosts Brentford ensured that Wanderers suffered their first defeat in the league since Boxing Day down at Griffin Park on Saturday afternoon.

Florian Jozefzoon opened the scoring just before the break for the Bees while despite Bolton’s best efforts to force a leveller during the remainder of the match, Neal Maupay’s strike on the stroke of full time ensured that the Whites left the capital empty handed.

And speaking following the final whistle, manager Phil Parkinson covered these points…

On ultimately leaving the game without anything to show for our efforts…

It was a frustrating afternoon, but I felt that we did enough to get something from the game. I thought we started great and our two wide players were terrific – at times, they were too much for their full-backs to handle.

We got into some fantastic positions too, but we didn’t make enough of those opportunities. Obviously the goal was a set-back and it was a mistake which cost us and gave them a huge lift, but in the second half I felt that we had spells in the game where we really took it to them and were unlucky not to get a goal.

There were just so many times in and around the box that you’re desperate for somebody to put their foot through the ball for it to find the back of the net, but we just didn’t have that moment today.

We conceded late on again, but that happens at times because we’ve thrown three up top to try and get back in the game and it leaves you open to the counter attack.

I’m not too bothered about the second goal so much as we had to go for it, but all in all I felt we deserved something this afternoon.

On the spirit of the players throughout…

I thought the lads kept going right to the end and their attitude was terrific. There were a lot of positives from the game, despite the result, and we’ve just got to keep going.

We’ve had a good run over Christmas and New Year and although today is a set-back, other teams have lost around us so it’s as you were.

We’ve just got the keep maintaining the level of performance and workrate we’ve shown today and take it into the next game.

On Harry Charsley’s debut performance…

I thought Harry was excellent. He showed a good tactical understanding and with Brentford and their extra man in midfield, it is very important that you’re disciplined as a team, especially when you’re away from home.

And with that in mind, I thought he did a very good job for the team. It is difficult when you’ve been playing Under-23 football and you get put into a Championship game, but he coped really well with the 55/60 minutes he got under his belt which was always going to be his lot today.

On the 1,000 Bolton fans backing the lads to the final whistle…

They were superb today and I thank them for that. We would have loved to have sent them away with something this afternoon and we did everything we could to do just that, but it just wasn’t to be.

And finally, on the challenge of Ipswich Town next up…

We’re back at home next weekend and we’ve got a good week to prepare for that.

We’ll be looking at today’s game on the journey home, looking at the good parts of it from the lads and we’ll be aiming to pick up where we left off at home in recent weeks in the league come next Saturday.

Just fuck off. It should be a given that the players keep going to the end, you shouldn't fucking be praising them you tit.
