And yes we did, not on the same scale, but many German POW's were murdered by the hands of the "Allies" in retaliation, or is quite a few cases just pure spite, of what the "Axis" were doing.

No sides of the war were innocent or fighting cleanly.

Been to Dachau and just being there was harrowing as you know what happened there.  Even bought a "guide" book about the camp, and still have it.

But put that experience along with the experience of visiting Anne Franks house in Amsterdam, and I agree with the sentiments of Soul Kitchen, in starting this thread!

All joking apart, the German authorities have spent the last 70 years trying to pretend that it didn't happen.

I'm not saying they deny it happened, rather, they'd rather not talk about it and hope nobody ever brings it up in polite conversation.

I did an exchange thing to Bielefeld during my German A Level (Grade C - couldn't be arsed trying) and the girl who stayed with us knew fuck all about the war.

I showed her my history books in my bedroom (Fnaaar!) and she was stunned.

She didn't have a clue.

It's just not taught in their schools. But, to be honest, if it was us, would it be any different....?

Her Dad wasn't too impressed when I went over there and started asking about it.

"I know nussink ov zer Vor......eat your Schnitzel und shut zer fuck up!"

I asked a German colleague at my last job if they learnt about the war/hitler etc and she said yes, and it was regarded as important to learn about so the same mistakes weren't made again so it was compulsory in all schools. Maybe things were different when you had your exchange, but from my experience it's not ignored now.

A trip to Belsen, if you manage to find it, Dachau and in Poland, Auschwitz and Birkenau brings home with a bang man's inhumanity to man, and all brought about by a smattering of prejudice.

Went to Auschwitz on a tour years ago.Very eerie birds don't sing it's very strange.Just watching news at Ten and the French Kids are taught all about the brave soldiers that liberated there town.Dont teach it in our schools.We are to worried we may upset some fucking Moslem.So in some schools they have tried to introduce Moslem studies.Fucking Priceless. As it is June 4th the Longest day when young men retook Europe at great cost I'd like to finish this post with this statement. I was first taught about the two wars whist I was doing my GCSE's (My year was the first year of GCSE's - now that's showing my age)  and then studied them in more details at A-Level and then at university I specialised in events leading up to and during WWII as well as The Cold War.

So, basically the wars have been taught in schools for at least the last 26 years.

When I was training in Germany, I was in the sauna and it was mixed, on certain days they have mixed saunas , #Greatstuff.

The irony is that the Scots originally came from Ireland which is why you get Irish names with Mc or Mac at the beginning. They invaded the SW coast of Scotland and displaced the indigenous Picts and the immigrant Angles and Britons in southern Scotland. Some semblance of unity in Scotland finally happened when Kenneth 1st took the throne in 843.
