Annoying speak

Has it always been normal to start an answer to a question with the word "so" or is it just some new American thing?

Example:

Person X: "What's the plan of action?"
Person Y: "So, I thought we might finish off those reports..."

For me, it's on a par with that way that people talk like every sentence is a question.

I don't think I've ever heard so used in that way, maybe to open a meeting or something but I've not heard someone respond to me with "so..." after a question.

Maybe if they're trying to change the subject, Just maybe.

Aussies tend to start an answer with 'Look'.
Very annoying.

When asked how are you doing? I'm getting there.
Staring sentences with Look, I hear that daily from the Yorkshire folk.
Tea cake.
Gipping.
Working 9 while 5.

What about the use of "like" to mean "said"?

"And he's like, 'How are you?'  And I'm like,"Great, thanks'"   Grrr!

Absolutely, is the one that jerks my chain and the Irishman that greets someone with, is it yerself!!

What's annoying about tea cake? I like a nice toasted tea cake.

It's pronounced 'Tay cake'.

And they don't have fruit in them.

I like a tuna mayo salad on a Granary tay cake.
