Ben Alnwick is looking forward to pitting his wits against Mark Howard after completing his move to Wanderers.

The shot-stopper joined the Whites on a two-year-deal on deadline day having left former club Peterborough United.

And having seen Howard cement his place as the Whites’ first choice goalkeeper, Alnwick is relishing the challenge ahead as looks to stake his claim for a place in Phil Parkinson’s starting XI.

“I’m here to compete for the shirt,” he told “It would be a waste of time coming here if I didn’t think I could get in the team.

I spoke to the gaffer a couple of times and it was a no-brainer to come here.

“I’ve played against Mark a couple of times and he’s a really good goalkeeper. Two lads around the same age, we can only push each other and bring the best out of each other.

“It’s something I’m really looking forward to doing.”

Alnwick continued when reflecting on the move: “When I heard about the interest I was over the moon. It was a rush to get up, get the medical done and getting signed and I’m really happy with it.

“I enjoyed my time at Peterborough United but I felt it was time for a change. I was happy to get further up north with my family being up here.

“I‘ve played with Lawrie Wilson and Dorian Dervite before, while I know David Wheater from the England set-up when we were kids.

“I’m looking forward to seeing them again and it should help me settle in.

“A club like this should be in the Championship or even higher. The club’s start to the season has been strong but we need to build on that and get the club back to where it belongs.”
