Mark Beevers struggled to describe a “bananas” 90 minutes in which Wanderers secured their Championship status for next season.

Speaking to The Bolton News, the defender admits he had never played in a game which swung from joy to despair and back again in such a short space of time.

Adam Le Fondre’s opener was cancelled out by Simon Osborn and Jack Colback, only for David Wheater and Aaron Wilbraham to rescue three points in the last three minutes.

Wanderers stayed up, while Burton and Barnsley were relegated, and Beevers was still getting his head around matters at the final whistle.

“It was an emotional rollercoaster,” he said. “First half I felt like they had great chances but so did we.

“It was probably fair to be level at half time but I wouldn’t have guessed it at 0-0, more like 4-4.

“We stuck at it, got the goal, and the fans were electric when that went in. You knew the other scores were going for us.

“When the two goals went in it went a bit flat but credit to the boys we stuck at it. There were some tired legs out there, but we kept going.

“I was cramping up on about 75 minutes and I’ve not felt well this week – but we stuck at it. Wheats scored his equaliser and there was massive belief flowing through the place.

“When Albi scored that goal, it was just incredible. I have never, ever been in a game like that.

“I’ve been on the wrong and right end of a game where someone has scored at the end but for it to happen in a game of that magnitude. To stop in this division is bananas.

“I didn’t know whether to cry or to cheer. So I ended up doing both.”
