Wanderers' Under-23s were held to a goalless draw away at non-league outfit Clitheroe on Wednesday evening in their latest pre-season outing.

Proceedings got underway at Shawbridge and it was Wanderers who looked the brighter of the two sides inside the opening stages, with Stephen Duke-McKenna looking lively.

The home side almost drew first blood though, with an effort from a tight angle cannoning off the corner of the post and crossbar with four minutes on the clock.

A let-off for Wanderers, they responded in kind with a cleverly-taken free-kick which Dennis Politic ultimately slammed into the Clitheroe wall.

With both sides growing into the clash, Clitheroe powered downfield with only Zuma and Jake Turner to beat, but the former pulled off a superb last-ditch challenge which earned him a round of applause from all inside Shawbridge.

Just over halfway through the first period meanwhile, Jack Earing found himself in space 25 yards from goal before seeing his eventual shot whistle just wide of the upright.

Although both sides were enjoying periods of possession, goalmouth chances were at a premium and neither goalkeeper was really being tested.

Leon Arnasalam then proceeded to trick his way into the Clitheroe box, but upon finding himself within sight of goal, he fired over the crossbar.

Come half time however, the clash remained goalless.

The Whites made six changes at the break, including replacing goalkeeper Turner with James Aspinall, meaning that only two of the original starting XI remained on the pitch.

Wanderers were looking dangerous on the counter attack from the outset too, although Clitheroe were dropping balls into the mix that David Lee's side had to keep their cool to deal with.

Despite both sides enjoying possession however, chances were limited - a combination of solid defensive work from both sides and a lack of composure in front of goal.

Luca Navarro came into the fray with 25 minutes to play and almost broke the deadlock, only to see his tame header dealt with by the Clitheroe keeper at close range with the striker in on goal.

The visitors pressed forward inside the closing stages, while the Blues also pushed for a late winner, but neither side could make the breakthrough as the spoils were shared come full time in a game of few opportunities.
