ANTONI Sarcevic has taken a major step towards a first team comeback at Wanderers.

Ian Evatt revealed that the midfielder has returned to light training duties with no reaction to the hamstring injury he suffered at Port Vale last month.

Sarcevic was due to miss “several weeks” of the run-in but the Bolton boss admits he could be forced into a decision on bringing him back sooner than expected.

“He did a lot of pitch work today and felt great,” Evatt told The Bolton News. “As I said before, it is a bit of an awkward one because of where it is and we don’t want to push too much too soon.

“At the moment, though, he is progressing really well. He has done a lot of work on the grass today with the ball and had no reaction, so there’s going to come a point where we make a call on it.

“For now, it’s giving the best possible chance of not a recurrence of that injury.”

Sarcevic was promoted out of League Two with Plymouth Argyle and Fleetwood Town and his experience has proved invaluable in the dressing room despite the injury, says Evatt.

“We’ve missed him because he’s the captain of his football club and you need your leaders on the pitch, especially at times where there’s pressurised situations,” he said. “Sarce has been a player that has been promoted out of this league a couple of times before so he understands what it takes and it is why he wants to be around the lads all of the time, even when he isn’t fit and available. He has travelling down to Newport and to Forest Green because he wants to be there for the players.

“That is great, and I am sure that you can see it from afar that the group is really together as one. You can hear the screams and the shouting and encouragement from the stands, from the non-playing substitutes, from the ones that are outside of the squad.

“Everyone wants this really badly and we have worked really, really hard to get into this situation and to get this opportunity.
