bolton - 'They will be up there' - Oxford boss gives verdict on Bolton draw 17495117

Oxford boss Des Buckingham was pleased with what he saw from his side against “a very good Bolton side”.

The points were shared following a goalless draw at the Kassam Stadium as Wanderers maintained their place at the top of the League One table and extended their unbeaten run.

Nathan Baxter made a couple of fine stops in the first half to deny Stanley Mills and Cameron Brannagan.

The Whites had more joy in the final third after the break but Dion Charles, Jack Iredale and George Thomason all saw efforts saved by Brighton loanee James Beadle.

“It almost felt like a game of chess at times and I think that is what you get when you have two teams who are organised and want to win the game,” said Buckingham.

“Then it is who takes their chances and I thought we created several, we just couldn’t put them in.

“Towards the end, they had two or three as well so on the balance, a draw is probably a fair result. But I am very pleased with what I have just watched.”

It was Buckingham’s first home game in charge of the U’s, having replaced Liam Manning who left to join Bristol City.

“They have come off the back of a 7-0 win at the weekend,” the manager continued.

“I have just said to the players, they will be up there at the end of the season and that is where we want to be as well. For us to do that, we need to make sure that we perform.

“We spoke about a reaction after Saturday (a 2-0 defeat at Cheltenham) and what I have just seen against a very good Bolton side, I am very pleased with.”

Wanderers are back at the Toughsheet Community Stadium this weekend when they face Harrogate in the FA Cup second round.
