The name ‘Gudjohnsen’ could potentially return to the back of a Wanderers shirt in the near future, The Bolton News understands.
Georg Gudjohnsen-Mitchell, nephew of Icelandic great Eidur, has been taken on trial by the club for the next 10 days.
He appeared as a trialist for the B Team against Salford City on Tuesday night and could stay on to face Barrow on December 19 before a decision is made on his future.
Gudjohnsen-Mitchell can play either in midfield or up front and is currently on the books at Windsor, who play in the Combined Counties League Division One, at step seven of the football pyramid.
Windsor’s home ground is based in Beaconsfield – hometown of Wanderers chairman Sharon Brittan – and the club tweeted a message of good luck to the 19-year-old on Wednesday afternoon.
Born in Reykjavik, Gudjohnsen-Mitchell had a prolific scoring record at youth level but has yet to feature for a full-time club.
Wanderers regularly use their B Team set-up to run their eye over trialists and test how they operate in a professional environment but the family name has ensured that this one catches the eye.
Eidur Gudjohnsen made his name in English football with Bolton after being picked up by Colin Todd as a teenager. Having previously played in Iceland and for Dutch giants PSV, a serious ankle break had set his career back but he went from strength to strength at the Reebok, eventually leaving the club in a £4.5million move to Chelsea.
Gudjohnsen returned for a second spell at Bolton under Neil Lennon in 2014/15, hoping to force his way into the national squad for Euro 2016.
In a glittering career around the continent he won the Champions League and La Liga with Barcelona and two Premier League titles with Chelsea before retiring completely in 2017.
Gudjohnsen’s three sons have also followed him into professional football - Aaron Svein Gudjohnsen has 20 caps for Iceland and plays for Elfsborg in Sweden, Andri Gudjohnsen was on the books at Barcelona and now at Danish side Lyngby and Daniel Gudjohnsen, is now at Malmo in Sweden having been a youth player at Barca and Real Madrid.
The former striker's dad was also an Icelandic international, and history was made in 1996 when Eidur made his debut as a substitute, replacing Arnor Gudjohnsen in a game against Estonia.
