Nathan Baxter says Wanderers “let down” their fans at Wembley and vowed to do everything he can to put it right next season.

The goalkeeper has been a key figure for the Whites since arriving on a free transfer last summer following his release by Chelsea.

Baxter was ever-present in the league until he picked up a wrist injury against Barnsley in February, which kept him out of action for a couple of months.

The 25-year-old returned to the side at Bristol Rovers and made some crucial stops during the play-off semi-final first leg at Oakwell.

Baxter says he has loved his first year at the Toughsheet Community Stadium but admits the Oxford result was tough to take.

The shot stopper is determined to make sure Wanderers come back stronger next season and help the team go one step further as they bid to reach the Championship.

He wrote on social media: “My first thoughts are with the fans from Wembley. Those who backed us so well, as they have throughout the season, were let down by our performance.

“It’s hard to explain and come to terms that a season’s work has left us short of what we wanted to achieve.

“There is nothing we can do now other than make sure we are better next season at everything we do to turn these feelings around in 12 months’ time.

“Barring the final outcome, I have loved my first year with this club, the chance to play for this team and everything that goes with being a Bolton Wanderers player.

“The future is what matters now and I will be doing everything I can to make it a positive one for all of us.”
