I know most of you are pretending not to be interested and will be secretly watching & listening to this by the usual means!

Will Evatt change his starting 11 for this game in the hope of giving some of the lads game time together and thus seeing some improvements over the game against Shrewsbury last weekend?

Will we get another tonking tonight?

Bolton Wanderers v Aston Villa Under-21s: Big Match Preview

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Hosting a team of Aston Villa’s top kids at the start of an international break isn’t likely to get the pulses racing for most Bolton Wanderers supporters – but there are a few players who have had their eye on this game for some time.

Bolton lifted the Trophy in 2023, then sponsored by Papa Johns, and enjoyed all the attention that comes with winning a Wembley final.

And last season’s penalty shootout defeat at Blackpool in the quarter-final came with some degree of hurt, albeit there has been much debate since as to whether the club needed a heavier workload.

This time around, Ian Evatt has made it clear he wants to use the group stages to sharpen players he feels need more game time. His lot has been made more complicated, however, by the fact six of his first team squad are now away on international duty, making the task of adhering to EFL rules on team selection that little bit trickier.

Injuries also narrowed his options against Barrow in the opening group fixture, won by the odd goal in five at Holker Steet, but a handful players have now made their way back to fitness, and they will be the ones looking to impress against Villa’s youngsters.

Klaidi Lolos made an impressive start in this summer’s pre-season friendlies following his arrival from Crawley Town. The 24-year-old came on for his debut 15 minutes before the end of the 2-1 win against Leyton Orient on the opening day of the season but was levelled by a poor challenge by home defender Dan Happe and had to limp off the field before the final whistle.

Lolos had played behind the central striker in the 3-4-3 system Ian Evatt introduced in July, but during his enforced absence the formation was shifted back to 3-5-2. Two slots have now become one for the attack-minded midfielder, and Kyle Dempsey’s recent form suggests he pushed his way to the front of the queue.

It is a similar case for Carlos Mendes Gomes, albeit a much longer comeback from injury. The former Luton Town man had slowly started to show why Bolton paid £300,000 to bring him from Kenilworth Road, scoring important goals at Cambridge United and Northampton Town. But a serious Achillies tendon tear 20 minutes into a game at Wigan Athletic in February left him on the shelf for several months.

Gomes had made just three league starts for Bolton – but the game at the DW was his third in a row, suggesting he had discovered the niche in Evatt’s team that some had doubted.

He played alongside a number nine, in two cases Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, and in one, Victor Adeboyejo, and that could very well be where he is pitched against Villa.

Randell Williams has also been slowly integrated back into the first team since damaging his foot on the day before the play-off final in May.

The wing-back has started twice in the cup competitions this season but his last league starts were in the two-legged play-off wins against Barnsley back in May, a time where he looked to have pushed ahead of loan competition Nat Ogbeta.

The signing of Szabi Schön in the summer has put extra pressure on Williams as he returned from injury but the Hungarian’s international call-up means he should get a call from the start against Villa in one of the wider berths.

Should Evatt decide to use Williams on the right, and give Josh Dacres-Cogley a rare night off, then Sam Inwood has been waiting in the wings for the last few weeks, travelling with the first team for experience.

The academy defender replaced Williams in the 8-1 win against Manchester United’s kids last season and is well regarded by the Bolton coaching staff.

Luke Matheson has been called up in this competition before and could be employed on the right side of the defence. He was not registered in the EFL squad list but can play in this competition.

The former Rochdale and Wolves defender has been touted for a loan move but has thus far not been able to find a suitable club.

Wanderers' goalkeeping injuries could also mean an unexpected debut for Luke Hutchinson, who was recalled from a loan spell in the Northern Premier League with Marine before the weekend's 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury.

The youngster has experience of being around the first team and has been an unused substitute on a few occasions but with Nathan Baxter and Joel Coleman injured and Luke Southwood away with Northern Ireland, he could be drafted in for a surprise shot.

The shootout gets you an extra point. That extra point would have guaranteed us a place in the knock out stages.
Not sure how we stand now.

Watched most of the second half and as ever, we had all the ball with no end product. Our penalties were crap!

Ian Evatt admitted that Wanderers’ penalty shoot-out defeat against Aston Villa Under-21s in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy was “baffling”.

Oliwier Zych was the hero for the visitors, denying Aaron Collins and George Thomason from 12 yards.

The young goalkeeper also made a series of impressive stops during the 90 minutes but could not keep out Victor Adeboyejo's header, which cancelled out Trai-Varn Mulley's opener.

“I don’t quite understand how we have not won the game,” Evatt reflected. “I think they had two shots, two attacks, probably in the whole game and we have let them off the hook.

“Great credit to a young Aston Villa side who have played and ran their hearts out, but it is a game we really should win.

“I think it is a lack of maybe focus, a lack of final third detail. We looked rushed, we looked panicked, we didn’t make the final pass enough, we didn’t finish with a shot or action.

“When we did get into those positions, our quality was poor. We should score two after one minute, we have missed from two yards out which is crazy to think.

“If you look at the stats of the game, it is baffling we have lost on penalties. There were opportunities tonight for people to impress and try to get themselves in the team for the league games, and I don’t think there have been many favours done there.

“It is just a case now of refreshing, refocusing and getting ready for an important block of fixtures.

“I think we have improved in the league and we must continue to do that. If we win our extra game, we are only three points off second and that is our aim - everybody knows that.”

Luke Hutchinson started in goal with Nathan Baxter and Joel Coleman out injured, while Luke Southwood is away on international duty.

Randell Williams and Klaidi Lolos also got minutes under their belts after recovering from their respective injuries.

“I could have played all the kids but that is not fair on them to throw them into this game,” the manager added.

“We needed some minutes for players out there – Randell and Klaidi needed minutes. We didn’t have a goalkeeper so had to recall Luke from his loan when he was doing well there.

“The timing of the game was unfortunate but that team should certainly win that game. When you look at it, it is a game we clearly should have won with the stats.

“But stats don’t win football matches, players do and tonight we haven’t done enough to win that game.”

MATCH REPORT: Bolton Wanderers beaten on penalties by Aston Villa's kids

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Wanderers fluffed their lines in 90 minutes and then again in the penalty shoot-out to leave themselves red-faced against Aston Villa’s kids.

Aaron Collins and George Thomason had penalties saved by the outstanding Oliwier Zych to give the young Midlanders something to celebrate on a night desperately lacking in any quality football for those few who turned out.

Victor Adeboyejo had salvaged a complete embarrassment, levelling the game with 10 minutes to go when Trai-Varn Mulley had given the visitors a shock first-half lead.

The Bristol Street Motors Trophy might be low down on everyone’s priority list this season but that is not to excuse a dire display.

Wanderers made seven changes from the side that had drawn against Shrewsbury, handing Luke Hutchinson a debut in goal and bringing Luke Matheson and Klaidi Lolos in for their first starts of the season.

With the exception of their goalkeeper, the experience in the Bolton line-up contrasted greatly with a Villa team which had been almost entirely switched from their Premier League 2 match against Newcastle United at the weekend. Just defender Ethan Amundsen-Day survived in a squad who barely had a player above the age of 20, and whose average squad number was a whopping 76.5.

Whispers of another cricket score like the one registered against Manchester United last season passed around the small crowd, and when Aaron Collins broke through to bring a save out of keeper Oliwier Zych after less than 60 seconds, a landslide did look likely.

Wanderers virtually pinned the youngsters into their own penalty box for 20 minutes, and should have put the game well beyond doubt in that time.

Randell Williams scooped a shot over from point blank range and was then denied a goalscoring opportunity by a fine challenge from Leon Routh after linking up well with George Thomason.

When Ricardo Santos played a sympathetic back-pass to Hutchinson on the 15 minute mark, you wondered whether the academy graduate would see the ball again, but Bolton’s wastefulness in front of goal would soon come back to haunt them.

John McAtee looked in the mood, hassling and harrying to win possession, but his shooting radar was not quite in synch. After driving one effort wide from the edge of the box he then flicked a diving header wide from a lot closer in.

His strike partner Collins was faring no better. He slashed and bobbled a few efforts at goal without any luck but it looked like only a matter of time before the Whites made a breakthrough.

Lolos thought he had scored after getting his head to Williams’ left-wing cross but watched as Polish keeper Zych clawed the ball off his own line.

Matheson and Williams wasted two more presentable chances before the game was turned completely on its head with Villa’s first attack of any note. Brad Burrowes got space to swing a cross in which drifted over keeper Hutchinson and left Trai-Varn Mulley the simple task of heading into an empty net in front of a deserted North Stand.

Zych’s heroics continued, and even more impressive save to push Lolos’s powerful drive over the top when he seemed to be moving the other way. And moments later he was brave at the feet of Jay Matete to make another important stop, sending his team ahead – somehow – at the break.

Evatt is unlikely to have issued a half-time team-talk with as much venom as he did on Saturday against Shrewsbury but he cannot have been pleased with the lack of end product his side had produced after so much territorial pressure.

They nearly got a helping hand just after the break when Amundsen-Day diverted a cross from George Johnston just wide of his own post. The same defender then made a timely challenge to stop Collins from breaking through a few moments later.

Wanderers continued to command all the possession but had started to run low on ideas around the hour mark, when Evatt brought on Vic Adeboyejo for Lolos to give some extra muscle up front.

Considering the experience gap, the fact the League One men were now scrambling to get back into the contest was concerning enough. The quality of some individual performances, however, bordered on the embarrassing.

Williams had a poor night curtailed mercifully early, as Sam Inwood came on off the bench, and Kyle Dempsey came on to try and add some more urgency to a game that had gone flat.

The midfielder struck the crossbar with virtually his first touch, a fierce free kick from 25 yards given for a foul on McAtee.

But it was fellow replacement Adeboyejo that spared Bolton’s blushes, heading home Collins’ cross for his first goal since the opening day of the season at Leyton Orient.

Wanderers’ subs certainly added something that the second half had been lacking, Dempsey lashing another savage drive just wide with nine minutes left on the clock.

The fourth official may have found some of the extra minutes from Saturday tucked away in the dugout, offering Bolton another five to try and avoid a penalty shootout. But just like the Shrewsbury game, the composure needed in the penalty box just wasn’t there.

A point secured, could Bolton grab a second via spot kicks?

Borland scored the first for Villa but Collins – who had endured a poor night – had his effort saved by Zych.

Amundsen-Day blasted his penalty into the top corner, Dempsey also striking his kick well to score.

Brannigan sent Hutchinson the wrong way but Villa keeper Zych was then handed his second yellow card of the game for leaving his line. A quirk of the rules means there is a reset at the start of a shootout, so he was able to continue, and save Thomason’s effort.

Burrowes then nestled the winning spot kick into the bottom corner to win the game.

Not the debut Hutchinson would have wanted. And not, in any way, shape, or form, a night to remember for Wanderers.

It was a strong team we put out but Villa's team was mainly u18's and not even their u21 team. We should be beating them easily.

Williams. Collins and Matheson were all absolutely hopeless and should have been hooked after 30 minutes.

Well, that was good ol laugh - after 24 shots at goal we needed brickfoot to come on and nod in from 4 yards. All I will say is we need one or two at the January window. Something is missing in the current squad.
The current golden boy GT should have been pulled at halftime - even super john on the commentary said his name was barely called. Williams has lost the ability to beat a man of cross a ball consistently and Collins is a bit too casual for my liking. I hear we have drawn Man Utd's under 12 Girls side in the next round ......should beat them.
