Allen's films have become increasingly sentimental and death-obsessed since the 1970s - he should have stuck with what he was good at e.g. Bananas, Everything you wanted to know and the Orgasmatron in Sleeper. He was good at slapstick and visual jokes but disappeared up his own ass around the same time he disappeared up his stepdaughter's.

Enjoyed his'Zelig'. 'Broadway Danny Rose' too. One of my favourite films of his is 'Radio Days' which he directed but didn't appear in. Bit of a tainted genius for me, his stand up material was some of the best I've ever heard.

He was a stand up first and foremost and that talent underpinned everything else he did. I've seen all his films apart from Blue Jasmine and TBF he has improved a bit in the last few years with e.g. Vicky Christina Barcelona, but there was a lot of waffly shite in between the two periods and more since with Midnight in Paris. Why do romcoms I ask?

I enjoyed Blue Jasmine but Woody Allen's films are definitely a mixed bag.

Manhattan is a masterpiece IMO, I actually don't like Annie Hall which is lauded over.

he's made some fantastic films and some absolute stinkers.

I liked Annie Hall. But if I could only take one film of his to a desert island it'd probably be 'Bananas'.

Sleeper made me laugh.

Some great lines in Sleeper. "One false move and the nose gets it".

I watched Shutter Island this afternoon. I say "watched" but actually fell asleep about an hour in.

Awful.

I've watched most of Bunuel's films but I've still not got around to The Young and the Damned (Los olvidados) yet

Some films are only good at the time they come out. It's hard to judge now a film from 30 or 40 years back. I remember standing in a long line around the block with parents to see Goldfinger. Now you wonder why...but at the time there was nowt like it.  Later on we were in line for the Exorcist in Manchester (I think it was banned in Bolton). Show it to young folk today who have grown up on much more graphic horror flicks and they would wonder what all the fuss was about.
Annie Hall & Manhattan (mentioned above) were great at the time...because they were unique at that time.

I did once try to make a point of watching some of the older ones.  The good, the bad and the ugly was surprisingly good
