Virtually every news story these days has a social media angle. Whether it's some terrorist spouting his bullshit, murderers brandishing guns, or sex pests posting photos of their knobs - you can guarantee that every story involves social media at some point.

I admit I don't get social media. I don't get how having 785 cyber "friends" has any meaning, how your current mood should be of interest to anyone else, or why I need to "follow" some poncey footballer and read his inane ramblings.

Am I missing something? Am I out of touch because I prefer to talk to real people and would rather have 3 close friends than 500 I haven't seen for 20 years?

Can someone please help me to "get it".

Isn't this site part of the social media world?

Twitter is the one I don't get. What of any importance can be said in so few characters? Why in the world would anyone want to "follow" what Stephen Fry or David Bumble Lloyd say in their frequent (but ultra-brief) outpourings? Much better to hold real, face-to-face conversations, as you say, Nat.

By the way, do you or anyone else on the site have many female friends where the idea of sex doesn't enter into the relationship? I only ask because a lot of men on here give the impression that women are to be judged largely on the basis of physical attractiveness.  A lot of my friends are females that I share interests with and play sport against/with, and the degree of fanciability doesn't enter into it. Other halves seem happy enough without jealousy rearing its ugly head.

A very good point Jay Jay. Being an ugly bugger myself, I have always found that society places far too much importance on physical appearances, more so where women are concerned. I would much rather spend my time with a woman with a good sense of humour and a bubbly personality regardless of her looks instead of a bleach blonde bimbo who thinks Norfolk is in East Angular.

When Blur and Oasis had a feud going, it was a big deal. Everybody was talking about it.
If that happened now, nobody would give a shit. It would be just one of a million stories about famous people slagging each other off every five minutes. Why is that? Simple answer...Twitter.
It's easier to attack people on a computer than it is in person, so it's common sense that social media should bring out the worst in people.

Also, being reliant on social media means people forget how to socialise face to face. If you put two 80 year old strangers together at a bus stop, chances are they'll strike up a conversation. Two 18-30 year olds is a different story.

Tinned Toms - You know it makes sense!

I wouldn't miss social media one bit. I go on facebook occasionally and then I don't know why I've bothered. Hundreds of people who I've not spoken to since I was at school saying how their kids Ill or they've booked their holiday or some equally boring shite I don't give a shit about and as for Twitter, I just don't get it, so never use it.
