Anyone remember their first TV?
Ours was a tiny black & white effort about the size of a bread bin from Bullough's TV rental. Dad knew the bloke there,I think his name was Ted,and we got a good deal.
Unfortunately,we only had an indoor aerial,so for much of the time I was given the job of waving it about until we got a reasonable picture,at which point Dad would insist I remained in that position until the programme he was watching had finished.
I was also used as the remote control.
How times have changed.

We had a solavox (comet/Currys brand I think!), the housing was made of chip board and some laminate wood effect plastic round it.

It did have a remote that was silver I think with buttons that were hard to press on it, the back was sellotaped on to stop it falling off and the batteries falling out!

The stand that came with it was screwed into the wood of the TV underneath! Very Happy

No idea what make it was but my earliest memory of watching telly was it being a faux wood affair with big clunky buttons that made a very satisfying "Thunk!" when you pushed them in.

Black and white of course.

First colour telly in about 1980, rented from a shop Radio Rentals in town.

I was mesmerised when I first saw a colour picture.

It was Wales playing rugby union against somebody (Australia or The All Blacks) and the vividness of the colours blew me away.

My parents couldn't afford a tele when I was a kid but I can remember going to my Grans in the early sixties after school and watching wrestling and horse racing on a huge wooden black and white set.

The first TV I remember had a numbered dial on the side of it numbered 1 to 12 I think.

Not sure why because back then there were only two channels BBC and ITV and everytime you wanted to switch it over you had to get up and 'click' the dial to the number you wanted - it was either 3 or 8 (or something like that) as no other numbers worked!

I remember the telly closing down at about midnight - there was no 24 hour TV back then - and the national anthem being played.

When you switched off the telly the picture shrank to a white dot on the screen and took ages for it to finally fade away.

I remember my parents buying our first colour TV just in time for the 1974 World Cup.

Our first colour TV was from Radio Rentals. It was a slot meter job, taking sixpence at a time.
I didn't think life could get any better.
I remember at the close of the evening, the announcer would tell you to remember to switch off the set.

I told my 13 year old nephew about the shutdown and the national anthem and he thought I was joking.

He went and asked his Dad and he said that I was pulling his leg.

I had to enlist the support of the mother-in-law to verify my claims.

Black and white tellies showing only three channels to all the stuff we've got nowadays in only 35 years.

I honestly believe that technology is accelerating at a rate unprecedented in human history right now.

But is that a good thing....?

Bendy tellies.....?

We thought that this was the very zenith of technological cool in my youth:

And it's not that long ago...!

Ours was a wooden, black and white Bush. It's funny how things come full circle

First TV I saw was when my dad was in the army and all the kids used to go to the one house in the married quarters that had it, to watch Childrens Hour, (such as Muffin the Mule and Four Feather falls) after which we all got chucked out.
We later got our own which was a very small black and white screen. As Sluffy said we used to see who could watch the closedown spot for longest, after the Epilogue and National Anthem.
In 1962 my dad bought one of the first 'remote' tv's, which consisted of a hand controller with two buttons, and a thick cable from it to the tv. One button released the channel so it could rotate to the next one, and the other button was the on/off one. High tech indeed ! (and it was still black and white , as it was only 1962)

Still got one of those in the loft.

Mrs B won't let me throw it out "just in case".

Just in case what....?

The world suddenly decides that digital formatting isn't the way to go and we all go back to VHS?

I love her deeply, but sometimes.........
