Josh Vela has been sent back home from Wanderers’ Austrian training camp after being hit with a virus.

The midfielder had not trained this week and the decision was taken not to risk the problem passing around the camp.

He is now back in the UK and will train with the Under-21 squad for the time being, with the club expecting him to be fully fit for their first home-based friendly against Morecambe on Friday.

Vela’s exit on the eve of the first pre-season game against Sturm Graz this evening has been tempered by the return of Neil Danns, who had not trained with the first team until yesterday morning.

With Martin O’Neill seemingly poised to take on the vacant job at Leicester City, Neil Lennon can move on without the speculation that has followed him around for the last couple of weeks.

Bookmakers had suspended betting on the Republic of Ireland boss late yesterday afternoon, which should mean Wanderers can breathe a little easier as they welcome a small group of travelling fans at Stadion Kumberg today.

It is unlikely Max Clayton will feature against the Austrian side, who finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season and qualified for a Europa League spot.

Fitness checks will also be run on the likes of Zach Clough and Derik Osede, although no major problems were reported from the Whites’ training base in Pallau yesterday as they prepared for the game.

Darren Pratley is looking forward to testing himself against quality opposition, similar to the game at Brondby in Denmark 12 months ago.

“Pre-season games are never pretty but sometimes it can be better playing against the better teams because they keep hold of the ball and you get a runaround. You get your fitness work out of that,” he told The Bolton News.

“When you come up against some of the lesser teams it can be a bit too relaxed.

“I think this will be a good test for us, so as long as we come out of it with no injuries, we’ll be fine.”

Back at home, striker Conor Wilkinson has agreed a loan move to Barnsley.

The youngster was initially due to sign a permanent deal at Oakwell but failed to agree personal terms with the Tykes.
