The Independent newspaper will cease as a print edition in March.
Has the printed word had its day with regard to news?
Do you still buy a newspaper?
I reckon they'll die a death within 20 years.

I wouldn't even give it 20 years TBH.

Big shame to see the Independent drop, the British press is already right leaning enough. They need to innovate to stay alive though, the Guardian attempted it by moving into new offices where they can host live events and discussions as a means of diversifying. Hasn't worked so far by all accounts, who knows what the press will look like in 20 years News Corp only at this rate.

The independent never really sells. I get one copy to sell each day in my work and it's always left at the end of the day when I'm doing my returns. Although the i paper who is by the same people as the independent sells quiet well.

The Guardian costs £1.80. I read it online for nothing. It can't possibly survive.

I remember The Independent launching.  Shocked

I feel very old now......

We're all to blame for the demise of the written press, if we're honest.

I used to buy a paper every morning but I haven't bought one in about five or six years.

The problem is that nobody nowadays is going to pay cash money for information that you can get for "free" via the internet on your phone or other device.

It's got to be considered progress, but it's a shame nonetheless.

(I'll never stop buying books though - shove yer Kindle!)

I buy a paper every day, so I have something to do at work.

Yeah but you work in a (very expensive) chippy so that doesn't count.

Now then Bread. The Kindle has a place. Can't replace a physical book though.

Tinned Toms - You know it makes sense!

As long as we don't lose the daily sport we'll be fine. It's the kind of in depth reporting this country just couldn't do without.

The Daily Sport will be the only paper left in twenty years.

I read the Telegraph and the Daily Express but I buy them more out of loyalty to the old boy who runs my local paper shop. We always have a natter and we have become quite friendly over the last few years. He is selling up and retiring in three months time and I intend to forsake newspapers altogether once he has gone.

I agree. It's too bloody big to handle. I started reading the Daily Express because of Hugh McIlvanney who was a brilliant scribe and very knowledgeable on boxing and football..
