Max Clayton has put himself back on the first team radar at Wanderers.

Phil Parkinson was on hand to see the 22-year-old come through an hour of the development squad’s 3-2 victory over Leeds United at Thorp Arch yesterday lunchtime.

Concerns had emerged in the last couple of weeks over Clayton, who had made a brief comeback in the Checkatrade Trophy against Cheltenham Town last month before suffering a setback with more swelling on his knee.

The former Crewe star has played only a couple of minutes of first team football since November 2015 and has now twice had to abandon a comeback.

But after specialists gave him the green light to return again last week, Parkinson was happy to see the youngster come through an hour unscathed, and will now monitor him closely over the next few days to see if any complications emerge.

“It was great to see Max out there and for him to get through 60 minutes,” the manager said. “Hopefully he’ll have no reaction and we can see how he gets on over the week with a view to him being potentially involved over Christmas.”

Parkinson decided not to put Darren Pratley into the game - giving him an extra week’s training - using Chris Taylor, Jamie Proctor and James Henry as his allotted over-age players.

“I was really pleased with their performance,” Parkinson said. “Procs and James got themselves a goal and Chris Taylor played very well - his pass for James’s goal was excellent,” he told The Bolton News. “They needed the game time but, again, they have shown the right attitude when I needed them.”

Henry was taken off with a shoulder injury with 10 minutes remaining, although it is hoped the problem will have cleared up by Boxing Day.

Meanwhile, development squad regular Alex Honeyball has joined National League North side Stalybridge Celtic on a work experience loan.

Wanderers have also sent a reminder to fans that half season tickets can be purchased up to kick-off on Boxing Day.

Parkinson’s side have 12 games remaining with tickets costing £160 for adults and £50 for children.
