Max Clayton can be the calm head to see Wanderers’ promotion push over the line, says Phil Parkinson.

Restricted to the bench since his return from a long-term lay-off in November, the 22-year-old could be thrown into the starting line-up in this weekend’s crunch clash at Scunthorpe United.

Gary Madine is a major doubt for Glanford Park after suffering a shoulder injury in the 1-0 win at Southend.

Much has been made of Wanderers’ poor record without target man Madine – and they are still to win a game without him in their starting line-up.

But Parkinson believes the door is open for Clayton to make a contribution against a team who are also clinging to slim hopes of automatic promotion.

“Gary was tremendous in the first half at Southend,” the manager said. “But when he came off we beat Shrewsbury 2-0 and he came off again and we’ve won and Max made a great contribution; that’s important for him as well.

“I said to the lads at half time it would be nice to give Max a lift, he’s waited a long time for his chance.

“He’s a calm player, he’s got good quality, and Gaz is a good player, but we’ve got other good players in the squad as well.”

Wanderers put themselves into a commanding position for automatic promotion thanks to Mark Beevers’ injury-time winner at Southend but Parkinson continues to keep his feet firmly on the ground.

“Nothing is won yet, of course, it’s just a step in the right direction, that’s all it is,” he told The Bolton News ahead of boarding the Bolton-bound coach. “It’s a big step but it’s a step in the right direction. We’ve got to continue to churn out the performances. We’ve got the chance to get the job done and we need to work towards that as quickly as possible.

“Scunny are a good side, they’ve got some good players, but what a way to go into that game, on the back of this win. We can’t wait for it, we’ll have to get the lads’ feet back on the ground because when you score like that it’s a great feeling and when you win 1-0 away from home it takes a lot of special qualities.”
