Phil Parkinson is set to trust his instincts and avoid making major changes at league leaders Wolves.

Despite coming in for criticism from some sections of the support after the 2-2 home draw with Reading on Tuesday night, the Wanderers boss is likely only to fine tune his game-plan at Molineux.

Parkinson took plenty of encouragement from extending the club’s unbeaten run to seven games against a side which had stuck four goals past Derby County in their previous away game.

And faced with the top team in the division, it is unlikely Wanderers will be chucking the baby out with the bath water and making significant alterations in tactics or personnel when they travel to the Black Country.

“I look back and analyse every game, and Reading is no different,” Parkinson told The Bolton News. “Yes, there are aspects where we can improve. But equally there are lots of things I am pleased about and we can take to Wolves.

“There were certainly times where we tried to cross the ball from too deep and we should have put a few more passes together, and switch the play. There was enough space on the pitch to do that, and when we did we looked more dangerous. We gave the ball back to Reading too cheaply at times and against a side who are so good in possession it can drain you. That’s what happened at times but we still had chances to win the game. We were just unfortunately unable to take them.”

Dropped points have become a recurring theme for Wanderers of late but Parkinson has hit back at suggestion his team has been too defensive.

“Sunderland we were 2-1 down and came back to 3-2, so it’s a little bit harsh,” he said. “Fulham are a dangerous team and I thought we were magnificent in that game. We also threw another striker on there and ended up conceding – so should we do this, or should we do that?

“All the talk at half time against Reading was ‘let’s go and score the third goal’. We didn’t say ‘sit back on the lead’ or ‘protect what we have got.’

“There were a few tired legs coming off the pitch at the end because the lads gave us everything and of course we were disappointed but we brush that off now and head to Wolves.”
