Bolton Wanderers would like to wish our former centre-forward Wyn Davies a very happy 78th birthday.

An archetypal target man, Wyn Davies earned the nickname ‘Wyn the Leap’ because of his heading ability. He began with Llanberis and Caernarfon before joining Wrexham in 1960. He scored 22 goals in 55 League games and, in March 1962, Wanderers paid £20,000 for his services with Wrexham also taking Ernie Phythian.

He took over the number-nine shirt and grabbed his first goals in a 4-1 First Division win over Chelsea. His best season with the Wanderers came in 1964-65 when he scored 25 goals in 38 games, and it was in 1964 that he won the first of 34 full Welsh international caps, 16 of those being earned while with the Wanderers.

He became linked with a number of First Division clubs and his final game for Bolton came in October 1966, we he scored the Wanderers’ goal in a 2-1 defeat at Bury, taking his tally to 12 goals in as many games for that season.

Newcastle United paid a club record £80,000 for him and he was a member of their Fairs Cup-winning team.

In August 1971 he returned to the North West with Manchester City, playing alongside ex-Wanderers Francis Lee and Freddie Hill, and a year later he moved across the city to Old Trafford. Davies later had spells at Blackpool, Crystal Palace and Stockport County before ending his league career at Crewe Alexandra in 1977.

He spent some time in South Africa nefore returning to England and non-league football.

I could be wrong but I've a feeling that the one in the centre, sitting next to Wyn, might just be Pop Robson. Anyone know any different, or recognise the one in the black jumper?

Wyn became a carpet cleaner after his footballing career ended. How times have changed. Think you're right about Pop Robson, but the man in black is driving me mad. I know the face, but the name won't come.

Loved watching him play - a proper old school CF.

Doesn't seem it was Pop Robson. Jim Iley and Pat Howard says The Chronicle.

The article confirms he was later a carpet cleaner and then a baker. I'm sure he told me he worked for Warbys when I played golf with him once.

Here's an old photo from the BEN in the days when I believed what I read in newspapers. But it was mostly the back page of the BEN that interested me.
