Bolton wait on PFA talks before making player furlough decision

Pressure is building on the PFA to reach a blanket agreement with clubs in Leagues One and Two this week to reduce or defer player wages during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With some clubs already voicing concern that they will be unable to meet April salaries, the prospect of mass furloughs could become a reality unless a solution is found quickly.

Wanderers have already put the majority of their non-playing staff on temporary leave but say they are monitoring what happens with the players' union this week before deciding on their next move.

"We are awaiting the outcome of PFA and EFL talks along with most clubs. It's important we support each other during these times," said an official statement, released to The Bolton News.

Some, including League One rivals Sunderland and League Two Crewe have already furloughed players to mitigate costs during the lockdown.

Such is the financial concern across the bottom two divisions, however, that owners could place hundreds of players on leave at once to drive home the point that they cannot survive much longer without gate receipts.

Although the EFL provided a £50million relief package last month, many sides have pointed out that the money was simply an advance of funds which had already been factored into their running costs for the rest of the season.

Another £125m has also been pledged from the Premier League - although the majority of the total is made up of parachute payments owed to clubs who have recently been relegated to the top flight and so will not affect Wanderers.

Furthermore, with the EFL announcing last week that they plan to resume the season behind closed doors, the cost of bringing staff and players back from furlough in time to stage games without any money coming through the turnstiles will present another problem.

PFA chairman, and former Bolton Wanderers player, Gordon Taylor, said a deal would be thrashed out "as soon and efficiently and practical as possible".
