Talks between Wanderers’ owners, the playing squad and the PFA are set to step up a gear as the club looks to strike a deal over the partial deferment of April wages.

The club has confirmed to The Bolton News that they are “working through available options” with first team players after an EFL proposal that up to 25 per cent of wages should be deferred this month because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Opinion among League One and Two clubs seems to vary. Some owners – including Peterborough United’s Darragh MacAnthony – were lobbying for a standard 50 per cent deferral, while others say the recommended 25 per cent figure is arbitrary and was circulated without proper dialogue between the union and its members.

Wanderers have declined to comment on the detail of their offer to players, or indeed when the deferred wages would be paid, but with April salaries due to be processed in just over a week’s time it is clear that the matter is becoming more urgent.

The situation will be complicated by the fact almost all the first team squad falls out of contract at the end of June.

Bolton’s owners, Football Ventures, must already decide whether short-term extensions will be offered to the likes of Jason Lowe, Remi Matthews, Luke Murphy and Daryl Murphy to see them through the remaining 10 games of the season, when they resume.

It has also been reported that the EFL are considering introducing stringent salary caps for the 2020/21 season and could put the matter to a vote this summer.

Change is in the air, with many experts forecasting the coronavirus pandemic will prove disastrous for players coming out of contract this summer as football is forced to change its fragile economy.

Around half of players on the books at Championship, League One and League Two level will be available on a free transfer, claims Bury-born Sky pundit, and Salford City co-owner, Gary Neville.

“There is a serious problem brewing in the next few months,” he told the Sky Sports News’ Football Show.

“Over 1,000 players in the Championship, League One and League Two are out of contract at the end of June and clubs haven’t got the money to recycle them back into the game.

“It’s going to be a shock for the whole of football, but it will be the players at the lower end of the game who will suffer the most.”
