Looking Back: Wanderers legend Nat Lofthouse introduced hi-tech banking 11526106

Dealing with our finances at the push of a button has become part of everyday life for many of us with apps on our phones and online banking services.

But in 1991, the High Street banks were only just beginning to get on board the computer revolution.

The Royal Bank of Scotland on Deansgate called on Bolton Wanderers legend Nat Lofthouse to help them launch a new touch sensitive screen to give customers instant information.

He was one of the first people to use the new terminal which had been developed from a prototype used by the bank the previous year.

Bolton was one of the first branches in the country to get the new machine as the project was rolled out across the country.

Anyone wanting up-to-date information on personal loans, mortgages or equity release could ask questions of the terminal all via touch screen.

Customers could also get print-outs of the information.

Manager Geoff Wright, pictured with Nat Lofthouse said: “This is another example of the Royal Bank of Scotland enhancing services both to our existing and potential customers.”
