Wanderers’ bold transfer strategy has received support from an unlikely source.

Bradford City boss Stuart McCall believes Bolton are in an enviable position as salary caps look set to be voted in before the end of this month.

Clubs will be restricted to spending £1.5million on salaries but – according to McCall – the relative size of Bolton’s squad compared to their rivals leaves them with more room to manoeuvre.

Wanderers have secured Eoin Doyle on a three-year deal and are closing in on another wanted man, ex-Plymouth Argyle midfielder, Antoni Sarcevic.

The club has bucked the trend in what has been a relatively quiet market in the lower divisions but McCall can see the sense in their approach.

“People say how can they do that within the cap but it’s how you spend that budget,” said the Bantams boss, who was interested in bringing Ali Crawford to Valley Parade before Bolton were able to secure him to a new two-year deal.

“We’ve had the retained and released lists sent through and some of the clubs at our level have still got really big squads.

“But Bolton, for example, haven’t. They have a lot of young kids but have plenty of places to fill.

“If they want to use the money in the salary cap by going and getting a few big hitters, they can do that. It’s about how you use it."

Meanwhile, former Wanderers striker Joe Dodoo is on the radar of League One Crewe, according to this morning’s reports.

The former Rangers and Leicester City front man scored four times for Bolton last season but has not been retained by the club.
