'Two poor goals' - Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna on defeat 13381383

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was left ruing “two poor goals” following his side’s defeat against Wanderers at the UniBol.

Kieran Lee and substitute Dapo Afolayan struck in the second half as the Whites ended a run of five games without a win.

It is McKenna’s first defeat since taking charge at Portman Road last month following Paul Cook’s departure.

The Ipswich boss felt his side were in control for most of the game but admits they didn’t create enough going forward.

He said: “I didn’t think it was a bad performance. I thought there was elements of the game we were pleased with.

“I thought we started well – first 20 minutes I thought we controlled the game.

“Probably the worst part of the game was the end of the first half – the game became a bit random and scrappy from our point of view.

“We made a couple of changes from a tactical point of view and I thought we controlled the second half really.

“We didn’t create enough in the final third. We played most of the game in their half but we didn’t penetrate enough.

“If you do that, the game is still open and obviously two poor goals to concede - really out of nothing and we end up going home empty-handed and disappointed.”

Ian Evatt opted to utilise a 5-3-2 system and handed debuts to new signings James Trafford and Aaron Morley.

“They played a different system today. They played more of a back five and changed from what they have been doing over the last few weeks,” McKenna added.

“That’s maybe in some ways a reflection of our positive performance last week [against Gillingham] and something we’ll probably encounter a bit more.

“They’re a good team and they’ve brought in some good players over the last few weeks.

“I thought we imposed ourselves pretty well but obviously they had their moments in the box and we didn’t.”
