Ian Evatt's target for Josh Sheehan injury comeback 13409825

Josh Sheehan is targeting a return for Wanderers at the start of pre-season.

The Wales international saw his first campaign at Bolton ended prematurely when he damaged his cruciate ligament in an FA Cup first round game at Stockport County in November.

The injury required surgery and though the midfielder has recently posted a picture of him walking without crutches, he will not be available again until the summer.

Ian Evatt says the club’s medical staff are happy with his rehab to date, and that he is upbeat about joining the squad again when they come back in for training before the 2022/23 season.

“I think if you speak with him he will have set himself goals,” said the Bolton boss. “I think the start of pre-season is his aim and ambition, and at the moment that is a realistic thing.

“For now, the operation went well, everything is going well recovery-wise, but there is a long road ahead.”

Ex-Newport playmaker Sheehan had started the season well at Wanderers, scoring against MK Dons on his debut and adding further three goals before the injury stuck.

Though disappointed his summer signing did not get more of an opportunity to impress, Evatt is backing Sheehan to come back stronger.

“He has been given all the support he needs,” Evatt added. “He has a very strong family around him. The club, the players and the staff also support him.

“It is a long road to recovery for Josh but it is one I think he will take in his stride, and he will come back fitter and better again for next season.”
