Wanderers sweating on fitness of two key players for trip to Doncaster Rovers 13665386

Wanderers could be without Declan John and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson for the Good Friday game at Doncaster Rovers.

Ian Evatt says he will be treading carefully with the fitness of both players after the reported injuries during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

Wing-back John withdrew in the second half with a hamstring problem and was replaced by Liam Gordon, who looks favourite to start at the Eco Power Stadium.

A back injury had limited Bodvarsson’s training in the build-up to the game and Evatt is wary of pushing the Iceland international too far.

“We’ll have to see,” he said. “Jon has played a lot of football in a short space of time really from January onwards. He has missed a lot of football at Millwall earlier in the season and then, not only that, had the international travelling and international games on top of what he has done for us. I thought he looked a bit jaded.”

Wanderers are also keeping an eye on Amadou Bakayoko, who came on as a second-half substitute against Wednesday.

“Baka as well has done a lot of travelling with Sierra Leone and played games and we’re managing his energy levels at the moment,” Evatt continued. “He is fasting with Ramadan so we have all these things to think about.”

Evatt is happy with his options in attack, however, and feels that Dion Charles can now progress after his Football Association disciplinary matter was resolved last week.

“We’ve got a good group of forwards, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “It’s great for Dion that he can concentrate on his football now and we’ve dealt with that other situation.

“Things are positive and there are lots of things to be pleased about. We are competitive now against these big teams but it’s how we now get to the next level and get ahead of those teams and I do think there’s work to be done.”

Bolton return to Doncaster for the first time since February 2020, when Joe Dodoo’s goal was not enough to stop Keith Hill’s side falling to a 2-1 defeat.

The club had won on its previous two visits to the stadium – then known as the Keepmoat – in 2013 and 2007.
