Wanderers’ January signings have made a big impact since their arrival at the UniBol, but how have they rated?
Dion Charles, James Trafford, Aaron Morley, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Marlon Fossey, Kyle Dempsey and Kieran Sadlier all joined the Whites halfway through the season.
Since then, Ian Evatt’s men have been one of the form teams in League One since the turn of the year.
Wanderers finished the season with wins against Doncaster, Accrington, Cheltenham and Fleetwood to clinch ninth spot.
But which players have caught the eye? We assigned each of the January signings an average rating based on Marc Iles’ scores from the past few months.
It is worth noting that playing time has varied, with some becoming regular starters while others have been affected by injuries.
Bodvarsson – 6.9 (21 apps)
Evatt eased Bodvarsson into the side gradually due to a lack of playing time at Millwall in the first half of the season.
But the Iceland international hasn’t looked back since his first goal against Wimbledon and has now scored seven times in total.
The forward is ruthless in front of goal and his hold-up play comes in useful in the games where Wanderers aren’t able to dominate possession like they would hope to.
Fossey – 6.9 (15 apps)
Fossey became a fan favourite at the UniBol after joining on loan from Fulham, making the right wing-back spot his own.
The Hollywood-born youngster made a big impact going forward, managing one goal and five assists in 15 games.
His season was sadly cut short by a serious knee injury suffered in the 1-0 defeat against Plymouth, but Evatt has already spoken about his hopes to sign the wing-back in the summer.
Morley – 6.8 (21 apps)
Morley has become an important player in the middle of the pitch since joining Wanderers from League Two side Rochdale.
The 22-year-old has an impressive range of passing and popped up with a moment of magic in the 3-0 win at Gillingham, finding the top corner with a stunning strike.
Morley already looks at home in League One and is only going to keep improving with time. He could be a big player for the Whites in the coming years.
Dempsey – 6.7 (11 apps)
Dempsey’s early Bolton career has been impacted by a couple of untimely injuries but the midfielder has shown promising signs.
Arguably his best performance was at Wigan, when he came off the bench and had a big impact as the Whites fought back to earn a point on the road.
With Josh Sheehan also on his way back from injury, Wanderers have real depth in the middle of the pitch heading into next season.
Trafford – 6.6 (22 apps)
Another loanee who has become an important player for Wanderers during the second half of the campaign, keeping Joel Dixon out of the side.
Trafford has made some important stops in recent months and also looks at home in League One despite his youth.
The young goalkeeper has a big future ahead of him and it will be interesting to see if the Whites are able to get him back on loan next season.
Charles – 6.5 (23 apps)
Charles hit the ground running after joining the Whites from Accrington, scoring six goals in his first 11 matches.
The Northern Ireland international then went 15 games without scoring for club and country, but it is worth noting he does a lot of work off the ball in Wanderers’ system.
Charles managed to get himself back on the scoresheet with a brace against Fleetwood on the final day and looks set to be a big player next season as Evatt’s men aim to push for promotion.
Sadlier – 6.5 (18 apps)
Sadlier had to be patient for opportunities early in his Bolton career but scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win against Lincoln.
In recent weeks, the former Rotherham man has become an important member of the side and has scored four goals in total, including a superb volley at Doncaster.
His versatility is also a big asset for Wanderers, having slotted in at wing-back at times following Fossey’s injury.
