Looking Back: Victoria Square shoppers watched world go by from benches 17698501

This photo shows some of the benches in Victoria Square, in June 1967 in front of British Home Stores. At the time traffic still flower across the square - hence the ‘No Waiting’ sign in front of the shops.

On the right you can just make out one of the much-missed fountains which fascinated youngsters.

It may have officially been summer but for many of the shoppers in town that day, a hat and coat were still the order of the day.

My dad tried to buy a suit from BHS, but the trousers weren't the right length, so he swapped them with a pair from a different suit. The cashier spotted the swap and made him swap them back.
He still bought the suit, but never darkened their doors again.
He always said they were prejudiced against men with short legs.
