Wanderers’ Under-18s were left to rue missed opportunities as individual errors saw them fall to a 2-0 defeat against Sunderland on Saturday morning.

Goalkeeper Harry Campbell was called into action early on as he denied Jordan Blinco with his legs after the forward found himself one-on-one.

It was the young Whites’ turn to miss a good chance when one-on-one on the 15-minute mark as Will Abbotts ran clean through on goal only to have the ball taken off his toes just as he was about to pull the trigger, while Max Allen was unable to find the empty net when the ball rebounded kindly to him on the edge of the area.

Blinco gave the hosts the lead five minutes later, taking advantage of a missed interception to cut in from the left before curling the ball beyond Campbell with his right foot.

Bolton were unfortunate not to level the scores just before the interval as Abbotts fired straight at James Talbot after stealing possession inside the Sunderland area.

The Black Cats doubled their lead shortly after the break as Luke Molyneux cut in from the right and hit a low shot which squirmed under Campbell into the far corner.

Abbotts should have halved the deficit when Talbot fumbled a free-kick at his feet, however, despite the goal being unguarded the forward was unable to take advantage, instead hitting the post when just two yards out.

It summed up the Trotters’ performance on the day as they were left departing Wearside with nothing to show for their efforts.

Speaking following the final whistle, head coach David Lee was pleased with his side’s second half display despite the result, but was ultimately was left to curse the mistakes that shaped the outcome of the game.

“We competed very well in the second half, but the two mistakes cost the team today,” said the under-18s’ coach.

“Unfortunately we gifted them two goals today while we didn’t have the same luck in front of goal ourselves at the other end. If Will Abbotts has a little bit more fortune in front of goal and takes one of his chances then you get a very different game.

“It is disappointing but it is an experience we will learn from and build on in our next match.

“We did well not to let our heads drop after falling behind and kept fighting right until the very end. I can’t fault the lads’ attitude today.

“On a positive note we had two under-16s involved today. It was good for them to experience football at this level and I was pleased with what I saw from them today."
