Today's attendance.

My Dad told me we got huge crowds in the 60's and 70's for important games - daft numbers in the 30 or 40k region.

I was there in the 80's and we generally got crowds under 5000 in a largely empty Burnden Park.

We beat Liverpool in the first real "White Hot" game and took 8,500 to Anfield on a Tuesday night.

The following Saturday we played Plymouth and got a crowd of 8, 600 at Burnden.

We've had to endure some shit under Freedman but Lennon's here now and it's looking good but that attendance suggests that there's sill some reason why people aren't prepared to hand over their brass.

Are we honestly a football town?

I'm a Bolton fan, but I'm not sure.

If I was in Britain the attendance would have been 14,812. I can only do so much from my present location.

I don't think there was even 14811 there yesterday. I was once told by a club official that they count all the season ticket holders as attending ( because they've paid) whether they turn up or not. Don't know if its true or not.
The capacity is something like 27000 and to me it was less than half full yesterday.
Also I left at the final whistle and drove away with hardly any delays. I was back in the affluent suburbs of Ramsbottom by 5.35
A couple more wins ,home or away and we'll see the absentees return

Crowds have always reflected league position but that is the norm even for the self appointed best most loyal supporters of all at Elland Road and St James Park. All clubs have fans that will go regularly as long as they are doing well and will not attend when they aren't. Home gates gates would get back to 20K if we get on a roll and are looking good 2nd half of this season, if we go down no
more than 12k as it would be diehards only.

Unlike Norwich and Newcastle, we are smack bang in the middle of the world's football capital. Norwich is the only league team in the entire county of Norfolk (although King's Lynn and Great Yarmouth are only a couple of divisions behind) so they get 20k regularly. BWFC has something like 15 or 20  league teams within a 40 mile radius - all competing for the affection of the town's population and I think that - and the dire quality of our football - are the main reasons why our crowds suffer and why it's unlikely we'll be bought out by a gazillionaire. Our catchment are is tiny.

It's always been the same, people choose the games they want to go to.

Our last season at Burnden apart from the match against City and the last match against Charlton our next highest attendance was the match against QPR when we clinched promotion. All the other matches were between 12-15,000.

Should never have built such a big stadium.

a 15/16k seater would have sufficed.

I went to burden one time and it was 42,000 on......against Man City in the cup.....in the 70's.

Back in the 50's they would get 60,000.  Times have changed now.....we have too many big clubs around us. Back then people walked to the ground or got a bus.

The last part hits the nail on the head (well almost). Nearly every game was 3 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon.
For years I would be in the Boars Head on Churchgate from about 1pm until about 2.30- then I'd walk to Burnden. After the game I'd be home for 5.30- and got a copy of the Buff on the way home
Now I've got to drive to the Macron and hope I can get parked up. Then afterwards I would normally be in a traffic queue for at least half an hour- sometimes longer.
Its just so much more difficult to get there and away again particularly if the football has been as mediocre as it has been for the last three years- up until yesterday!!

Watching the round up of goals from the Championship on Sky this morning, I started looking at the crowds and one very obvious thing stood out - Everybody's playing in half empty stadia.

Surely, it's time for the clubs to bite the bullet and start charging less for tickets.

If it was a tenner to get in, I'd probably go more often.

I'm not a tight wad, but thirty quid plus extras for watching a game of football is not good VFM in my book.

I wouldn't even entertain paying that for a film at the Pictures, so why is it ok for football clubs to expect people to pay it?

It'll never happen though because some basic maths explains that 14,000 people stumping up 30 quid gives you £150,000 more a week than 27,000 paying a tenner.

But then again, that extra 13,000 paying a tenner each for beer and pies would pretty much off-set the difference, so it might make sense after all........

And the atmosphere would definitely be a lot better.

I don't bloody know......

Sort it out, Gartside!

:agree:

Not just championship teams playing infront of half empty stadiums either, I saw some of the Arsenal - Hull game the other week and thought the cameras tried to make the Emirates look full, if it showed you the top tiers, they were pretty empty.

Spot on Rammy! All season tickets are counted as attendance whether you turn up or not. When we got promoted to the old 1st Division under Ian Greaves in 1978 we had an attendance of 32,390 against Manure and the following season ( 1979/1980) we had 31,902 when Manure came visiting. Both were the highest attendances of those seasons.

Bolton are getting round about the crowds that they have always got at this level (for where they are in the league).

If Bolton were fighting at the top end of the table, you'd be pushing 20,000.

It's the same for all Lancashire town clubs and only big city clubs would near enough retain the crowds that they would have had in the Premier League.

There are so many other things to do nowadays on a saturday, especially so if the team isn't performing well.

I went to Middlesbrough away in our first season in the Championship when they were getting about 14,000 a game and I was sat near this group of Bolton fans that couldn't get over how crap - or was it "disgraceful" - the home turnout was.

Clearly it's just what happens when the novelty of the Championship wears off, and having a manager as dour as Freedman only accelerates it.
