Wanderers have been dealt a double dose of good news on the injury front.
Vice captain Matt Mills has been cleared to return after a minor ankle ligament problem and should be fit to face Leeds United this weekend.
He could have a fight on his hands to reclaim a spot at centre-half, with David Wheater in excellent form during the 1-0 FA Cup win over Wigan Athletic.
Mills had turned his ankle slightly jumping for a ball in the 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town on December 28 but has now returned to training and should be in contention for the club’s first Championship game of 2015.
“The damage was not significant,” Neil Lennon said. “He rolled his ankle but should be fine for the Leeds game. In fairness Wheater was magnificent for us. It gives us a little selection problem going forward.”
Rob Hall has also been boosted with the news his ankle problem will not keep him on the sidelines for an extended spell.
The winger posted a picture of himself wearing a protective boot over the weekend and met for a check up with surgeons yesterday but the former West Ham man has been told there is no significant damage to his ankle ligaments.
The youngster’s injury is being treated as a sprain and should mean he can return to playing duties in the next couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, Oxford United expect to be told today whether they will be allowed to re-sign full-back Joe Riley.
Michael Appleton is keen to capture the 23-year-old, who was a massive hit for the Us in his 28 appearances since August, and would ideally like to keep him until the end of the season.
It is understood two other clubs have also enquired about the Academy graduate, who returned to the North West at the weekend to discuss his future.
Having proved his fitness at the Kassam Stadium, Riley could be a specialist option on the right side of defence, where Josh Vela has provided ample cover in the last couple of months.
Kevin McNaughton also made his return from a hamstring injury in the development squad’s 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers and could now press for a recall to the first team after coming through 90 minutes unscathed.
Club skipper Jay Spearing also featured for Ian Brunskill’s side, playing 72 minutes, at Leyland.
Two goals from Conor Wilkinson either side of a strike by Chris Lester were enough to seal victory for the Wanderers second string.
