Wanderers’ FA Cup draw could be worth its weight in gold.
That’s the view of Neil Lennon, who admits his own transfer plans were handed a timely boost when the Merseysiders were drawn as the club’s fourth-round opponents.
The tie at Anfield will be screened on BT Sport, which makes the whole game worth in the region of £400,000, including winnings, to the Whites.
And Lennon hopes he will see the benefits as he tries to bolster his squad with four new signings in the next couple of weeks.
“The chairman was checking how much we'd get as soon as the draw was made,” he smiled. “Then we got the news the game was going to be on the telly. It is reward for a really good performance last week.”
Lennon also hopes the prospect of a trip to Anfield could create extra competition in the squad.
Jay Spearing and Emile Heskey will have added incentive to get involved at their former club, while Liverpool-born Neil Danns will also be desperate to be involved.
“It is great motivation for the players, but not that they needed any extra,” the manager said. “There are places up for grabs.
“To go away to Anfield will be special. With Emile and Jay being there it will be extra special for them going back there.
“I hope we go there and do ourselves justice. If we do then again it raises the profile of the club.
“It is a draw that is difficult, but not impossible.”
