Neil Lennon hopes to finally wrap up his first signing of the transfer window after this weekend’s game against Leeds United.
The Wanderers boss endured a frustrating week on the recruitment front and is understood to have lost out on Chelsea wonderkid Lewis Baker, who signed on loan for Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week.
Another attacking signing, due to be unveiled last Monday, has also been placed on hiatus after complications until after the Championship clash.
The names of several potential candidates have circulated – the latest and most surprising of which is ex-Millwall winger Jermaine Easter, who has just terminated his contract at The Den.
But the scope for new signings could be increased if Crystal Palace make a firm bid for midfielder Chung-Yong Lee.
The South London side are believed to have held initial discussions with Wanderers about a move for the 26-year-old playmaker but have not agreed a fee.
Reports suggest the Whites want £1.5milllion for the South Korean star, who is out of contract in the summer and “unlikely” to sign a new deal, according to Lennon himself.
Palace have yet to meet that figure but with the likes of Sunderland and Hull City also considering a move, they may have to bow to Wanderers’ wishes if they are to get the deal wrapped up quickly.
Lennon foresees a busy week.
“We have about four or five on the go at the moment,” he said. “I’d hoped to have something done by Monday, according to what I got told, but it hit a hitch.
“These things are never set in stone and agents play a big part. Until the guy signs on dotted line we have to be patient.
“We will probably have to get weekend out of the way and we can work on it next week.”
Missing out on England youth international Baker will be a blow for the Whites, with the 19-year-old tipped for stardom by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.
The teenage winger had met with Wanderers for talks but had a late change of heart when Wednesday – the club supported by his father – came forward.
Baker joined the Owls on a work experience loan and there is some suggestion that Lennon could revisit the deal later in the season.
Easter left Millwall on Wednesday by mutual consent and had been tipped to move to Bristol Rovers or Yeovil.
Word of Wanderers’ involvement only materialised yesterday but the club have not yet confirmed if the former Crystal Palace front man is on their list of targets.
