Former Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba has made a step back into football with Liverpool.

The former England Under-21 international retired three years ago after collapsing on the pitch in an FA Cup quarter final game at Tottenham.

He had gone into cardiac arrest and it was later revealed his heart had stopped beating on its own accord for 78 minutes.

After announcing his decision to retire from football Muamba has worked as a pundit, studied for a career in journalism at Staffordshire University and penned a column with The Bolton News.

But he has now started working towards his coaching badges after an invitation from the Liverpool academy.

“Fabrice came in to do a talk for the Premier League about his situation and how he progressed from a young player right through to recovering from his near-fatal accident,” said Reds’ youth coach Michael Beale.

“I was so taken aback by Fabrice’s enthusiasm and I spoke with him. Fabrice is friends with our physio, Andy Renshaw, from his Bolton days and he is starting his coaching badges.

“We invited Fabrice in and his personality has lit up the Academy in the days that he comes in, and he was with us this week watching our Chelsea game.”
