What is a Chav? I watched a horrible film last evening called Robot Overlords (the title should have clued me in but it had Ben Kingsley in a starring role) and his explanation of Chav was "Community Housed and Violent".

In keeping with this thread;s topic, there is a school of thought that says it's derived from a Traveller (ie gypo twats) word for young boy.

It's passed into regular usage in the UK to mean an undesirable sort who wears cheap fake designer clothes and is criminally minded.

Never heard the explanation you cite before Keegs. (Think they made it up for the film.)
