I am considering upping and going to France, maybe for a year, maybe forever, maybe split 6 months here and 6 there...

Anyone done similar and have any useful.thoughts or advice?

And more immediately, do any of you have a place in France or know of one I can rent for a month or two to test drive the life style?

Ps, main reason for going is to have slightly better weather, and a nicer house with plenty of land for most of the year...

check the price of stuff such as the price of food, renting accommodation, how much to insure your car there etc to make sure you can afford to move!

Have a job lined up before you take the plunge perhaps.

Making sure you are going for the right reasons and not to run away from issues that you are currently facing if that's the case as it never works! Smile

Don't be fooled by the weather. Paris is only about 200 miles from London and the weather isn't that much different. The south of France is much warmer in Summer but that's because France is a much bigger country. If you want better weather, a nicer house and plenty of land then Australia or America would be a much better option, plus they speak English.

Can you speak French?
So you have a job to go to?
Are you rich enough to take a year off work?
Do you have any dependents - wife, kids, dog, rabies.
Do you like snails?
Will you be bringing any migrants back in your boot?
Are you a Ngog groupie?
Do you like Johnny Halliday?

All vitally important things to be considering in advance of any move.

I'd go tomorrow.

Seriously.

Fuck it, Bigster - you get one crack at this life, mate.

What's the worst that could happen?

It doesn't work out and you come home and move into a council house and get a job in Tesco.

Whatever happens, you'll survive.

And I've always found that if you learn a bit of French and at least look like you're trying to speak their lingo, they'll look on you fondly.

And that's half the battle.

Get it done.

The wife wouldn't let me buy it.

Apparently "paying bills" and "buying food" are more important than acquiring a new sports car.

She's got a very twisted world view that woman......

No but you are meant to say barm instead of teacake (taycake) the further south you go.

Chip teacake

Bacon and Egg teacake

etc

I'm sure we've already done this.

Teacake's have currents in them.

Barm is the correct term for the round bread thing you put your chips on.

I know - look at the user name.

I am an expert in only two things in life - talking utter shite on the interweb and bread products.

Hot cross buns have currants in them (not electrical 'currents'  Very Happy )

You may know about bread Breadman but don't tell us what a teacake is.

In East Lancashire, the former West Riding of Yorkshire and elsewhere in the North like the town of Barnsley, a teacake is a round bread roll which is cut in half to make sandwiches. They do not usually contain any sort of dried fruit. They can be made with either white, brown, wholemeal, or Granary flour (a brand of flour produced by Hovis, made by malting wheat, crushing the grains, roasting them, and then mixing them with brown flour).[2] A favourite way to eat them is to slice them into fingers, toast and then spread with butter and Bovril or Marmite.

Bread related spelling mistake.

Can't believe I did that.

There's only one way to deal with this.

Tell the wife and kids I love them......I'm off to the shed.
