Watched a documentary on Sky about the rise of Bournemouth last night and it was a brilliant insight into how to rebuild a club from the day they avoided relegation to the Conference up to the PL.
Had to relive them pumping us to secure promotion last season but well worth the watch. An object lesson in living within their means, totally engaging the fans and the local community, intense training and recruiting players with "the right attitude" without paying silly wages.
Even if they get stuffed and relegated this year, they will make a packet and I have no doubt they'll invest it wisely.
What was noticeable is that they learned a lot from us i.e. how not to run a football club. Experienced players looking for a final payday were given short shrift or fair contracts, usually short term. Training is the most intense that e.g. Sylvain Distin has ever experienced. Everyone including the fans is bought into the idea of austerity and now they're reaping the rewards.
But more than anything else, it gave an insight into the type of player required to achieve success on a limited budget. Not as limited as ours currently is, but "what we could have had" when we did have some money to spend.
Recommend all Wanderers fans watch this if the opportunity arises.
