"Between 20 and 40 per cent of the population believe they have a food intolerance or allergy, representing an increase of more than 400 per cent in the past 20 years.
Yet according to the charity Allergy UK, less than 2 per cent of us have a food allergy — with only 1 per cent allergic to gluten."

Yes I know this comes from the Daily Mail (full article link below) but why do so many idiots think they have a problem with gluten and then expect us to give them free food?

I am obviously excluding genuine sufferers from coeliac disease which is a serious and unpleasant medical condition.

It's a modern day made up condition like depression, back ache and panic attacks.

Unfortunately the modern way is to pander to these people which in turn encourages other people to claim they have the same fake condition.

They could label all these things under two words: ATTENTION SEEKING

Human beings are just highly evolved apes, nothing more.

(Some more evolved than others, admittedly - just look at some of the stuff that gets posted on here.)

Wheat (ie where gluten comes from) is basically grass.

Apes aren't designed to exist on a diet high in grass - they're more carnivore than herbivore.

Same as they aren't designed to drink cow's milk.

Hence why we are seeing a rise in gluten and lactose intolerance.

We should all really just eat raw meat with the odd banana thrown in.

Ignoring the irony of someone called Breadman advising us not to eat bread, I think you are failing to understand how evolution works.

Yes we share the same evolutionary origins as apes but humans have evolved to handle a different and much more efficient diet. Firstly we use fire to cook food and this makes it much more digestible. Secondly many cultures herded cattle and evolved a tolerance for digesting milk from cows. This is why lactose intolerance is much more common in the Far East and it is not increasing. Nor is gluten intolerance - there is only an increase in idiots thinking they have various intolerances. There is no medical evidence to support this increase, if anything there is probably a world wide decrease as more people start eating a "Western" diet - not that that is necessarily a good thing.

I think I've got a pretty good handle on how major evolutionary changes come about, thanks.

And it takes millions of years, rather than the few thousand you're talking about in your example regarding the domestication of cattle.

I got most of my professional Food Science qualifications from the Campden & Chorleywood FRA.

Where did you get yours?

Evolutionary change can happen a lot quicker than millions of years. The way that humans have adapted to drinking the milk of cows being an obvious example.

And I am assuming you are not seriously suggesting that we should eat raw rather than cooked meat (apart from the occasional steak tartare).

But we haven't and that's my whole point.

The author of that article has a website where she tells us "good medicine should be based in good science, be inquiry driven and be open to new paradigms. Integrative medicine utilizes natural, effective and less invasive interventions when appropriate, such as Ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy, & acupuncture." Any one who believes homeopathy is based on "good science" is not someone I would trust for advice on medical matters.

In addition the article completely fails to demonstrate that humans have not adapted to drinking cow's milk. She says "About 75% of the world's population is actually lactose intolerant. Though that is an astounding percentage, it only further proves the point that humans are not intended to consume cow's milk." This is totally missing the point. Originally humans could not digest and did not consume cow's milk, but then a few thousand years ago some cattle breeding human cultures started drinking cow's milk. Those children who possessed the mutant gene that enabled them to digest this milk survived more frequently than those who couldn't and their descendants outbred those who couldn't. Which is why the vast majority of people descended from these cattle breeding cultures can and do digest cow's milk without any problem.

Finally to talk about humans not being "intended to consume cow's milk" is ridiculous and shows no understanding of how evolution works. Humans aren't "intended" to use fire to cook food but we do.
