The number nine shirt remains unclaimed at Wanderers, but for how long?
Neil Lennon is on the hunt for someone to ease his side’s goalscoring problems and intends to scour the loan market to strike a deal when the window re-opens tomorrow.
Last season Lennon struck gold when he brought Adam Le Fondre to the club from Cardiff City in January, with his goals going a long way to securing safety from relegation.
Le Fondre returns this weekend with his new club Wolves – but the fact Bolton have scored just one competitive goal so far this season shows just how much they have struggled to replace him.
Finances remain tight but after losing out on Anthony Stokes on deadline day, the Whites boss is determined to make his next signing count.
Here and JUST FOR FUN we take a look at some of the names linked with Wanderers in the last few weeks, plus some players who may be available for the right price.
Sullay Kaikai (Crystal Palace) – There have been whispers about the speedy youngster attracting Lennon’s attention for a while. At 20, he would represent a gamble, but he would be well within the Whites’ price range.
Rumour rating: 7.5 out of 10.
Yann Kermorgant (Bournemouth) – Another player linked with Wanderers on transfer deadline day, and one who has bags of Championship experience with the Cherries and Bournemouth. Is he too similar to what Lennon already has, though?
Rumour rating: 6.5 out of 10.
Gary Hooper (Norwich City) – Nearly joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan but saw the move collapse thanks to a bizarre argument involving hospitality boxes. Fulham are also sniffing round, but in an ideal world, Hooper would reunite with his former Celtic boss Lennon. Unlikely, but a nice thought.
Rumour rating: 5 out of 10.
James Vaughan (Huddersfield Town) – A deadline day move to Wigan hit the buffers, leaving the Terriers striker a wanted man going into the loan window. Pacy, experienced and a decent track record of goals. On the downside, a chequered fitness history.
Rumour rating: 6 out of 10.
James Wilson (Manchester United) – They are queueing around the block for the United youngster in the Championship and Lennon has certainly watched him progress in the development squad. It could come down to who offers him more game time, which would count in Bolton’s favour.
Rumour rating: 6.5 out of 10.
Kyle Lafferty (Norwich City) – The Northern Ireland international is determined to stay on at Carrow Road and pursue his Premier League dream, yet his lack of games must be a concern. Well-known to Lennon through club and country, he would represent a real wild card.
Rumour rating: 5.5 out of 10.
Nick Powell (Manchester United) – Fit again after a knee operation, Powell is in United’s Champions League squad but unlikely to be anywhere near Louis van Gaal’s first team thoughts. Lennon rates him and has enquired in the past, but he isn’t the paciest.
Rumour rating: 6 out of 10.
Tokelo Rantie (Bournemouth) – The South African has struggled to substantiate his £2.5million price tag with goals since moving to the Goldsands but is a sound all-round striker. May need more time in the Championship and could be a cost-effective option.
Rumour rating: 6 out of 10.
Dwight Gayle (Crystal Palace) – Displaced by a raft of new signings at Selhurst Park, Gayle does boast plenty of attributes which would appeal to Wanderers, not least a decent scoring record. Unlikely to be cheap, however, and that might put him out of Lennon’s reach.
Rumour rating: 5 out of 10.
Frazier Campbell (Crystal Palace) – Like Gayle, out of the picture at Palace, and also saddled with a big wage. A top player on his day in the Championship but had a few injury problems in the last couple of years too; puts him in the unlikely category.
Rumour rating: 5 out of 10.
Michu (Swansea) – The Spaniard had a wonderful first season in the Premier League with Swansea but his stock has fallen significantly in the last 12 months, leading to rumour his contract could be cancelled. Likely to be very expensive but could be a bargain for someone willing to pay the wages.
Rumour rating: 4 out of 10.
