Neil Lennon admits doubts had started to creep in to his own mind after waiting five months for a competitive win at Wanderers.

The Whites boss, who had last sampled victory on Easter Monday at Cardiff City, was questioning his own methodology after decent performances this season did not marry up with results.

But a 2-1 win against Wolves has changed his perspective and given the Northern Irishman plenty of encouragement heading into tomorrow night’s home game with Sheffield Wednesday.

“It was a relief,” he said of the win, which came courtesy of goals from Liam Feeney and Zach Clough. “We now have six points from six games, whereas when I came in last season we had five points from 11. That’s progress.

“We are far, far from the finished article. But there is a real spirit there.

“It’s a relief. You start doubting yourself, wondering if you can manage at this level, but the way we played first half and counter attacked in the second half, it was very pleasing.”

Mark Davies stole the show against his former club, earning high praise from his manager for his direct running in the second half.

“He’s playing very, very well,” Lennon said. “It was two unbelievable runs to create the chances for Madine and Heskey. He could have got one himself towards the end – it was a really outstanding performance.”

Wolves caused a few nervous moments around the Macron after getting themselves back into the game with a Benik Afobe penalty, leaving keeper Ben Amos to bail his side out with a couple of fine late saves.

“I didn’t even think it looked a penalty,” Lennon protested, “but it changed the psychology of the game. We got a little bit nervous.

“Madine, Heskey, Davies – all good chances to put us out of sight at the end. It could have been three or four.

“At the same time you’re thinking ‘don’t concede at the other end’ because that’s what happened last season.

“Wolves are a good team and they’ve spent a bit of money as well, so it’s pleasing to beat someone of that calibre.”
