Wide boy Marnick Vermijl believes Preston are riding the crest of a wave heading into tomorrow night’s derby.

After a rocky September, the newly-promoted Lilywhites have steadied themselves to take five points from the last three games.

And the Belgian defender, once on the books at Old Trafford, has been a key member of the club’s resurgence, playing as a wing-back in a 5-3-2 formation that has got counter-attacking down to a fine art in recent weeks.

“Things have gone well for us in the last couple of games,” he said.

“We went to Charlton, kept a clean sheet and scored three unbelievable goals.

“It was a good draw against Brighton and we had a couple of good chances.

“Maybe we were unlucky not to get three points from that one but a draw at the leaders was still a good result.

“I like the wing-back role which I’ve been playing in – I had played it before at Manchester United.

“It is a bit different because you find yourself up against both the opposition left-back and the left-winger, so you are almost doing two jobs.

“But if we switch play well as a team, we can get a lot of joy because there is plenty of space to run into.

“The system is working well because we’ve kept two clean sheets in two away games and have picked up four points.

“We are now aiming for the three points on Saturday when we play Bolton.”

Vermijl is taking nothing for granted, however, and is mindful that Wanderers can draw level on points with his club if they are victorious at Deepdale.

“Like us, they haven’t made the best start to the season,” he said.

“It is tough when you find yourselves at the wrong end of the table but in this league a couple of wins can move you up quickly because it is quite tight.

“In this division everyone can beat each other and every game is a tough test.”

His words were echoed by fellow defender Greg Cunningham, who isn’t distracted by the fact Wanderers are rock-bottom.

“There is no way that we will be under-estimating Bolton,” he said.

“They are struggling a bit having played some good stuff but not getting results.

“You look at the gap from mid-table to the bottom and it is only a few points, it’s tight.”
